okay- I have a relatively large personal file server that has been crashing due to overheating.

it consists of the following:
generic atx 450w power supply (it was like $25 shipped at most, so its not high-quality)
tbird 1000 (I was thinking of getting a cheap 1.5v 1700+ tbred, to hopefully reduce CPU heat, would this help at all?)
ECS K7S5A 3.x (works with palominos and tbreds, notoriously picky about power supplies)
512mb sdram
intel NIC
4 maxtor 120gb 5400rpm disks
1 maxtor 40gb 5400rpm disk
1 maxtor 60gb 7200rpm disk
1 wd 120gb 7200rpm disk
1 cdrom that is virtually never used.
3 80mm case fans (32cfm each)

running voltages/temps are as follows:
core1 => 1.87v (i overvolt-modded this chip by closing a L11 bridge to give 1.85v)
Vddr => 2.48v (not really necessary, i dont use ddr in this machine)
+3.3 => 3.31v
+5.0 => 4.99v
+12 => 12.60v

core temp => 44C (111.2f), (machine crashes around 48C (118.5f))
board temp => 33C (91.4f), (room temp in the house is around 73ish f, possibly 80f very near the server)

It was all running fine (but somewhat close to the limit) in my parents basement in a cool environment. Now it is in a somewhat warmer environment, and it barely works without crashing if i have a HUGE box fan pointed at it on high. The case temp seems to be fine (air coming out of the exhaust fans in the back is near room temp), but the PS fan is kicking out some MAJOR heat (possibly overheating PS, thereby reducing its power output).

I guess what i really need to know is: do i NEED a > 400w p.s. with this system? Would a decent 400w work better than my crappy 450w?

I am looking for a cheap ($50) power supply that will work with this setup. Noise is not really an issue as long as it's not too loud (think of 7000RPM Delta Black Label fans as too loud). Here are the PS's i'm considering:
1. Antec True430 ($90 @ newegg) (damn that is expensive)
2. Sparkle 400w PS (235w combined power) ($67 @ newegg)
3. A+GPB Enterprises 400w PS (240w combined power) ($37 @ newegg) (never heard of this one, but the numbers look good, any comments?)
4. Works 430w PS (230w combined power) ($50 @ newegg) (thermal fan control)
5. A+GPB Enterprises 450w PS (260w combined power) ($60 @ newegg) (3 fans, alos see #3 comment)
6. Enlight 420w PS (220w combined power) ($55 @ newegg) (have had good experience with enlight PS's in the past)
7. Heroichi (HEC) 525w PS (??? Combined power) (80 @ newegg) (would this be better than the antec true430?)

(vote in the poll...)

and thanks for all your help!

I would go with the Antec 430 from Knowledgemicro for $70 with free Fedex ground. I've bought from them a couple of times and always got my stuff. I don't know how much this will help your heat issue though. Are more/better fans an option. It seems like your having a huge problem getting the heat out which is understandable with all those drives.

LOL. KnowledgeMicro is on a short list of computer vendors I buy from. They were rated decent but not great on RR, but what I've bought from them was shipped quickly, good quality, and cheap. For $90 from them I got the Antec True 480W, and for $112 a Cooler Master ATC-201C case. Definitely blew NE and GG out of the water price wise, and I'm very happy with my shopping experience with them. They also have the Audigy 2 for $70, but those are all last week's prices. Get their price from PriceWatch, their web site is a few dollars more on some items. Here's a good link for PSU reviews.

You definitely should go with the Antec, either the True 430, or the True 480. The True 480 is really a much better deal, since it's only about $10 more, and has quite a bit more 12v & 5v power than the True 430. That way, when you decide that you need another dozen 120 GB HDs, you'll be covered...

Another vote for the true power 480. I also believe that it's one of the few power supplies that can actually supply more than its rating.

I had a similar problem when I upgraded to an Athlon the first time. Although I was using a 'certified' PSU it wasn't really up to scratch. I went down the Enermax route and I must say that it has been superb. They are quite pricey but well worth it for me. My system from then has never missed a beat except for some peculiar HD problems with IBM 60GXP's.

As for the Athlon XP, I moved from a 1333 thunderbird to a 2400+ and overall temperatures dropped by about 5C, which I think is pretty good.

update: I got the true430 from circuit city (so i could return it locally if i truly didnt need it).

When going from my generic Rhycom 450w p.s. to the Antec true430, the voltages actually went down (Below 12.0 5.0 3.3)... Also the antec spins my fans slower, and the machine crashes a lot faster now than it did before. This leads me to believe its a heat issue.

I've purchased a 1.5v tbred 1700+ (which i plan to undervolt and underclock), as well as a bigger heatsink / 80mm fan (as opposed to the cheapo coolermaster fan i had on there before). Hopefully this will remedy my situation. I plan on returning the Antec true430 and getting my $107 back (gotta love that returns policy at circuit city 😉 ).

Any other suggestions?

I thought about that, I guess i could do that.. right now it's stable because i have the side panel off, and a big-ass box fan blowing like 1000CFM right next to it 🙂

I seems like your CPU cooler needs some assistance. There are several vieties of TBird 1G's, with max processor temperatures ranging from 75-95C. That to me indicates that it could be a completely different or related issue. Do you o/c that setup? I assume no, but did you at one time? I'm wondering if re-installing the HS would correct your problem, but my thought is go for the 1700 as the 1G is getting ready for retirement anyways. Still, it may not solve your probelm. Your board probably doesn't have a PCI/AGP lock, how old is your video card anyway? Well, probably not as old as mine before my last upgrade. I say, damn it all just buy a whole new system 😉. Just don't get an Asus board, lest you incur God's wrath.

I bought a TBred 1700+ from newegg, and a GC69 from SVC, and I believe my problem is solved.

My temps have dropped as follows:

CPU Loaded: 52C -> 39C
CPU Idle: 47C -> 33C
Case Temp: 33C -> 28C

Also, interestingly enough, my bedroom no longer gets appreciably hotter as i sleep (it used to go from about 74F to 80F as I slept, now it feels approximately the same in the morning as it did at night).

Seems like an awful lot of change for just going from a TBird 1000 -> Tbred 1700+.

I believe I will be keeping the Antec Truepower 430, as it puts out less heat than my previous generic 450w, and less heat is a good thing.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions on the PS. You guys rock!
