Power Supply Suggestion

Hey, I need some suggestions for a relatively cheap but good quality power supply for the following:

Abit NF-7 Mobo
Athlon XP 2500+
XFX GeForce FX5900XT (needs external power)
512MB PC2700
Western Digital 80GB SE HD
NEC DVD-RW
Pioneer DVD-ROM
Soundblaster Audigy
Some LEDs & a temperature monitor

I know I can go with an Antec TruePower (True380??) but it's for a friend who wants to save as much money as possible but he still wants a reliable power supply.

Suggestions? Thanks!

I'd go for one of the Antec 330W or 350W PSU's... A more budget level would be a thermaltake PSU, but I'd trust the Antec unit more than the Tt unit. You really do get what you pay for (in most cases) with PSU's. Get one for cheap and you got a cheap one.

here's an idea, don't buy thermaltake. they suck.

Your setup is going to ask for a good amount from the psu and I'm judging a little that you may be overclocking so even the best of 350W PSUs will be under heavy load with it... or worse.

I was on a tight budget too and I wanted to try the Powmax Demon 480W. I was pleasantly surprised. I can't believe that it had colored caps, a very bright LED fan on back, a huge 100m fan (I think) intake on bottom and 1 exhaust on the back. Add on a lit switch on the back and nice grills and 2 SATA connectors and I can't believe I could get this for just over $30 shipped. I don't have my meter so you'll have to go based on other reviews for the PSU. But so far so good.

Also, side note. Bestbyte has these uv wirewraps that are dirt cheap. Even better if you buy 100ft of it... (about $27 shipped). I sold off 50 and kept the rest. Looks nice and you don't have to worry about taking caps off and finding out later that one connector is loose only to have lost your HDD in your findings (/me raises hand).

Again with the "Thermaltake sucks" claim!

Dude, you should back up them claims with some hard facts.

I have the Thermaltake Butterfly 480W Power supply and not only does it perform flawlessly, but it looks cool in a windowed case (changing LED lights and sleeved wires).

Overclockers Cafe's rave review

Granted its not cheap but the power supply is one of the most important components of a build and I think one should not skimp when looking to purchase one.

Newegg has it at $78.00

Be warned that the thermaltake purepower 480 is very loud. the spec is 17dB @1300 - 45dB @4800, but usually the fan speed is at least 3500 so I would guess the noise level is close to the max as well. When playing far cry, it becomes a very load noise like a constant whistle.

My Thermaltake is very silent, even during Far Cry.

At what fan speed are you running ? I started using the manual fan speed control, and noticed that if I set it to 3000 rpm or below, the noise level is much reduced. But there is still a very weak but higher pitch sound coming from the psu fan, maybe because of vibration ? Overall it's a good stable power supply and the lightshow is nice, and it's really great that all the wires are sleeved, but I'm still not sure about noise, maybe I got a bad unit (purepower 480 butterfly) ?

yea the powmax that came w/ my case was a POS. It was light as a feather. I g0t random reboots, and other crap. I put in a fortron aurora and the problems went away.

Can anyone report the number of fans in the Fortron? I'm not a big Tt user but I did install the 430W Pure Power in an XP2400 system not long ago and it's been exceptionally stable so far with the usual innards, 2 CDR's, sound card, NIC, 80g Seagate, 2 fans, etc. It's quiet, has bottom fan and it's under $40 at NE. All voltages are slightly above spec but not by more than 2%.

I haven't seen any sign suckage so far so I really can't dog it out yet, then again I said that about my Seagate. Sometimes it's a crap shoot.
