Power Supply Recommendation for an old rig

haven't really kept up to date on hardware for the past two years, so would appreciate any recommendation.

my coolmax 400w el cheap $40 PSU is starting to fail. funny that when I checked the newegg order history & product review, others unit has failed already (or starting to).

due to its crappy 12 rail, i was never able to clock this mobile athlon 2600 any higher than 2.3 ghz stable. been researching a bit but it seems old sure bets such as antec aren't exactly sure bets anymore.

I can probably just slap in a fortron 400w and call it a day? but I was thinking a stable 400-500w w/ good 12v might be a good bet, since this machine will be good for a home theater system (good old soundstorm).. and I'm fairly certain the athlon 2600+ can hit 2.4 ghz (since it did w/ a better PSU I borrowed from friend).

needs the PSU to be fairly quiet. going into a fairly silent rig.

price range: $50-$100 ?

there's a thermaltake TR2 500w at newegg for 54 after $20 rebate.. but it seems there are better PSU manufactures out there.. enhance, fortron, seasonic etc.?

again, appreciate any suggestion or input.

it seems the seasonic s12-380 or 430 might be a good bet since they arent some overinflated #.

The S12 380/430 are VG units. Since you spoke of them, buy one or the other.

Read me http://www.jonnyguru.com/PSU/ENP-5140GH/ It will Froggle for <$60.
I replaced a 6yo Fortron that was used in a recent build with one of these units.
It only has 4x4 pin Molex and 4xSATA connectors, so a Y-splitter or two may be needed.
Combined 12V is 28A, other specs at http://www.enhanceusa.com/

Go to http://www.jonnyguru.com/ for more reviews and tasty hot links.

I second the ENP-5140GH or -5150GH - usually save a buck or two by going to eWiz via Froogle. sometimes have free ground shipping that you can't get if you go via Froogle so check both ways.

Some Socket A systems draw power from 5v rail, not the 12v.

If that?s the case it's not going to matter how much 12v power the PSU has but how much 5v power.

Operandi, I could be wrong but my guess was... the OP knows his CPU is fed off the 12V.

Yes, I checked out his mobo before answering - it has the P4-12V socket (most nVidia based mobos do).

I have yet to see an instance where I could get free shipping. It would help a lot since shipping (to me anyways) is $12. The enhance 5140gh and the seasonic s12 380w cost the same shipped so if you want a little more power and sacrifice a little noise and sleaved cables, go with the enhance. If not, the seasonic.

I dialed in free shipping on the 5150 once last week but not since. There is a link in one of the PSU threads that gets it every time, but don't know if it still current.

thanks for the suggestions guys. the EN-5140GH looks great in price and from what I've read so far. can't really argue against the price too. plus I don't need any PCI-e connectors so the enchance looks like it fits the bill nicely.

compare w/ review of the S12s I've read, the EN looks like its more efficient and tighter in the rails... will keep reading more before I take the plunge.

funny how it's cheaper through a froogle link.

I posted in that thread... but still was unable to get free shipping. Is there a code?

They are both very efficient but the S12 has a slight edge, especially if you were to go with the 330 watt S12. The Seasonic is also built using higher quality components, top quality Japanese capacitors for example.

On the other hand the Enhance is still a very good unit and unbeatable for the price to watt ratio.
