Power supply rebranding

I've heard that Fortron PSUs are really rebranded Sparkles (or is it the other way around?) What companies rebrand what PSUs? It would be interesting to know, because it would help in looking for good deals on high quality PSUs.
 
Its the other way around.

PCP&C - Seasonic or Zippy(Emacs)
Antec - They're rebranded to but I forget who makes them originally
Tt PSUs - Depends on the model, not worth buying though
Coolermaster - Fortron I think
Ultra-X - Powmax

Can't remember who makes OCZ right now but its not just a rebrand, they actually make them specifically for OCZ. Maybe seasonic.
 
It's hard to say who makes what for whom these days because the market is more sophisticated; out and out rebranding is more rare than it used to be. For example, a couple of years ago Channel Well made at least some of the Antec PS's, but since Antec started selling the "Smart" and True family of parts, it's not so easy tell who the OEM is. I'm sure the Antec's are made by some big contract production house in China, but it's hard to know which one.

As far as rebranding goes, I do know that the Antec SLK3700/3000 is indentical on the inside with the Compucase LX-6A19. Antec must have payed some tooling fee to have a new front bezel made. Also, Cooler Master cases are rebadged ATCS-Tek cases. Similar to Antec, they started out wth straight rebadged products but now the front ends are changing somewhat.

Antec and Enermax both come from Channel Well
Zalman uses Forton
OZC and Tagan use Topower
I forget who makes TT but like LifeStealer said they aren't worth it.
 
Thermaltake is made by enlight. Enlight used to be good and make very nice entry level cases but now as you can see they stink. They are better than generic vendors like Powmax and what not though.

could someone show me where its proven that ultra's are made by powmax? i've been looking and can't really find it

I have asked for proof of this claim too and never gotten any.
 
Powmax also sells their junk under the names Demon, Chiefmax, and Chiefman. I guess they find successful PS makers and steals a part of their name.
 
Sparkle merged with Fortron-SOurce several years ago, and you may be able to see SPI, for Sparkle Power International, printed on the isolation transformers of Fortrons. Some of their other brands are Powerman, Aopen, and Hi-Q.

Channel Well makes Antecs except for models starting with PP-, which are HECs.

Thermaltake is made by Sirtec, Enlight by Sirtec or Enhance.

OCZ is either Sirtec or Topower, which may also produce Coolermaster.

PCP&C uses heavily modified designs based on Fortron, Zippy, Wintact, and perhpas Seasonic.

Powmax's web site shows several Ultra-X and Demon brand products here
 
Not sure about Enermaxes now, but older Enermaxes were from the same supplier as Topower and TTGI/SuperFlower.

Wow that's very interesting. I take it that TTGI is still makes good power supplies these days? A number of people have knocked on their reputation over the past month when deals on SuperFlower PSUs were posted, thinking that they were a crummy brand.
 
I always thought Topower (aka TTGI and SuperFlower) were pretty decent.

Oh, and Ultra is not made by Powmax. They're made by Wintech. Just do a UL listing lookup for their part numbers.

Speaking of PowMax... Is Leadman dead? I mean, do they actually manufacture anything anymore? If you go to Leadman's website in Taiwan, it's a dead link. Go to PowMax's website in Taiwan and it goes back to PowMax's US site. And the fact that they actually buy Ultra power supplies and resell them as there own. It makes me wonder if Leadman's factory is no more and all that's left is a US distributor using the name "PowMax."

Modified in what way? Do you happen to know specifics? I'm just curious 'cuz I bought a PCP&C Silencer awhile back (a 300-watter). I thought PCP&C made their own PSUs now and that's why their prices dropped down to more reasonable levels than they were known for before. 😕

I'd be interested to know what 'tweaks' or re-designs PCP&C does to improve on the basic design of the PSUs they start with. 🙂

Usually they ARE Fortron. Not that that's a bad thing at all.

What PCP&C do is get a shell and a component loaded circuit board from Fortron and then modify it from there with their own wiring harnesses and then testing them and rating them themselves. It's like when you buy "dual channel" RAM or an "overclock tested" CPU. The source product isn't too different, but the end result is superior.

Oh... And it turns out that OCZ's may be made by Topower/TTGI:

I thought PCP&C was based on Zippy/EMACS?
 
I understand they're made by Topower as well. Specs are nice. Haven't used a ThermalTake branded PSU myself, but they seem to have a decent price.
 
Only 18A on a 480W power supply? I missed that. Even my $60 Ultra 400W has more than that. :Q

Hmm.. So who makes them? Espeically seeing how the name of the thread is "power supply rebranding." 😉

I just love figuring out who makes what. It reminds me of when I used to do it at the Bicycle Shop.

I even do it with restaurants. Did you know Rio Bravo was owned by Applebees and then they sold it to Chevy's in 1999? That explains why the quality went down hill and eventually they all closed. 🙂
