I inherted own a rare notebook and I think the AC adapter is broken. The original AC adapter output is 18.5V /2.45 AMPS and has a unique design (square w/ 4 pins....almost like Dell Inspirion 8100) . I located one but it cost around $60 shipped. I don't feel like paying that much... however I found a compatible one except this AC adapter output is 18.85 V 3.2A and it much cheaper and it easier to find.

So in a nutshell

Broken AC Adapter: 18.5V /2.45 AMPS
Replacement AC adapter 18.85 V 3.2AMPS

Will this work? I think it will work but i need to be sure first.

That's 18VDC, right? If they're both DC, and if the plug tip is the correct polarity, it's a go!

I tried the replacement ac adapter and it will not boot.
I looked up the message (charging lamp) reveals and it says there is a charging error. However, I not sure it is anything to do w/ it but the replacement adapter doesn't work for this notebook. So I was think it I can disassembe the replacement AC adapter (using the "4 sqare part where its plug into the laptop) and placing it on the old one.

*the old adapter still work except the connection to the 4 square part is damaged

So the question is what is big circle plastic (What does it do?) just before the connection is made on the AC adapter

Good question, I have always assumed that they were voltage regulators of some sort. Google, here I come.
