Power Supply Question - -5V line - Silverstone ST60F

Hey - Just bought a new Silverstone ST60F - what a beast.

Anyways, read a lot of reviews at the Egg about DOA issues and it frying boards on first start so I figured I would sacrifice my trusty el-cheapo power supply tester.

Everything looks fine, powers up, fans on but no green light on my tester for the -5V line. Hmm - so I check the specifications and there is no -5V line.

So why no -5V line and is that going to be a problem -

Are those common for home PCs? If you have to use one of those, you're probably running off a server PSU anyway. Right?

Multi-User DOS 😀 <BSEG>, BBSes (I think a lot of folks still run private, local BBSes just for the fun of it), Data gathering from A to D, still many uses.

Hahahaha!

Come on, Zipper! I used to run a multi-node Wildcat! dialup BBS. I switched it over to the web in '96. It wasn't too long after that, when I dumped my USR V.Everythings in favor of ethernet via broadband.

Dude! Serial ports are history -- ancient history!!!

acegazda... don't worry about it... 😉

So ATX has very little reason to keep the -12V rail on modern PSUs. If you need multi-user DOS, then you need a older PSU.

I think server PSUs will retain the -12V for a while yet while the consumer models will drop it soon. So I won't worry about not being able to use my multiport card for the forseeable future. 😉 I still use an external serial modem for faxing, etc. so I use at least one of my eight serial ports for that...
. At least the board uses only one IRQ for all eight ports - much better than the integrated serial ports that use one each - not to mention the 500kbit potential data rate! 😉
. Small businesses would be wise to consider a serial terminal solution as well. They could afford to have several terminals scattered about the premesis to do stock lookups, etc. Much cheaper than having a full computer at each location and just as effective.
