Power supply problems

How do i find out what type of power supply is in my case, and what sort of problems are associated with lacking power supplies (i.e. 250W when 300W is needed)?

Open case, look at the letters on the powersupply, and you have the info you requested. Inadequate power could cause instability of your whole system. But if you got a 250 and your new motherboard needs 300, just try the 250 first. If it doesn't do it buy the bigger one.

btw if it's a Compaq you may need a can opener

PS problems are perhaps more closely associated with AMD CPU's than Intel's, since these chips require more power, generally speaking. But see this info. If you get a new PS you might want to look for one that is ATX 2.03 compliant. These will work with existing ATX motherboards and the upcoming P4/Willamette's too.
