Power supply Problem

Whenever I got home from school today I noticed that my room was unusually quiet. I checked out my computer to see if it was on, and it was. But whenever I tried to turn on the monitor nothing happened, it was in safe mode. Whenever I tried to restart it wouldn't restart, whenever i tried to turn it off using the power button nothing happened.
So i turned it off using the power supply switch. Whenever I tried to turn it back on, it wouldn't start up. So I took it apart and looked at it to see if I had all the cables plugged in right, and they all appeared to be. Next I tried to turn it back on to see if it would work, and all that happened was the light from my video card fan turns on for about a second and then goes off. Not even the main power light comes on, nor do any fans.

BTW my case is: RAidmax and so is the power supply was only 42.99 so maybe its just bad
I've had this computer for about 5 months.

It could be your power supply. If your CPU fan doesn't speed, it may have died and took the cpu with it.

Definelty sounds like a psu prob to me. Mine was acting up alsmost exactly like yours. I live in the Smoky Mountains here in North Carolina where it gets cold. The pc is in room thats w/o heat (unless we're in their playing games). I have to put a heater on the psu to get it to power up. BTW, the psu is brand new). When it does boot, the bios have to be reset and I get a "CPU Failure" warning. But it sounds like your psu to me.

Well I tested another PSU and it worked fine, actually better. So as far as getting a new PSU, what would you guys recommend as far as brand and wattage?

From the reviews it sounds good, and many people seem to praise it over at ocforums.com

Im kinda on a small budget but do you think this should be good for:

AThlon XP 2500
Radeon 9800 Pro
512mb Pc2700

Thats just an alright power supply IMHO. I would really advise spending the money on a true power 430 antec power supply. You won't have to worry about it any more. Keep in mind how many dollars in equipment you have hooked up in your equipment.

I'm thinking with that 9800 pro your gonna want/need a strong 12v rail for stability.

I have a problem too! I have a 350Watt PSU that came with my case and ever since I got the 9800 Pro installed the front LED tubes on my case started acting lazy and drained and when I restarted my PC I got that message that tells me to plug in the molex on my 9800 Pro when it already was. Oh and before noticing this problem my games would often shut down on there own and even sometimes got system lock ups. Anyways I disconnected the front lights and a cold cathode I have hooked up inside and everything was fine except that I still get the frequent game quits or system lockups after a while of playing, I thought it was the heat but everything inside feels fine but the CPU heatsink is a little warm. I used to have a Smart Fan II on my CPU but it broke so I got a new one and noticed that it looked a little different in design but still pretty much the same but when I have it on the highest setting it doesnt seem like it is because the my old one was way louder and definately pushed more air. These problems happened ever since I installed my 9800 Pro but the card seems just fine, no artifacts or too much heat so I am thinking that my components arent getting enough power due to adding the 9800 Pro which I also feels has insufficient power. Should I get a new PSU? I am considering the 480Watt TrueBlue from Antec, would this most likely be the cause of my lockups and such. I also plan to try new drivers before I get the PSU just to be sure that it is the PSU causing this but either way I am getting a new one soon.

PCTweaker5, yes, you need to get a new power supply and that antec sounds like a great choice for you.

Turns out the game problem was the 4.1 drivers, now Im running omega 3.10's and it works wonderfully. Im still going to get that PSU though I think I really need it.
