Power Supply problem or worse?

My power supply fan or the box itself started making a noise a few weeks ago. I've had case fans go out and it sounded about the same so I figured it was the fan. It stopped making the noise after a day or so and I forgot about it. Last night it started again a few minutes before the computer switched off on its own and never came back on.

When I press the start button the only thing at all that happens to the computer is the green light on the motherboard will come on. Nothing else at all happens no attempt to boot, no fans, no sounds..nothing. Is it possible that the power supply is out and still allowing a current to turn that light on OR does a bad power supply block all power and something else is wrong such as a ruined motherboard?

I don't know that the stats are important at this point, but just in case. Its a 1.6g amd on a shuttle motherboard with a atx 300w power supply. It hasn't been disturbed any time recently inside, and I have taken the power supply out, dusted it and checked the cables/wires trying to remedy the problem with no change. Still the little green light. I did the 'clear cmos' thing and removed the battery too like I read in some post.

To restate my main question is, Is there any possibility at all that its the power supply if the green light is on the motherboard or does that rule it out completely?

Thanks
Jimmy

Sounds like the power supply died to me. time to replace it with a good quality 350watt or higher power supply and you should be good to go.

yeah i agree with davey, if the fan was malfunctioning it may have overheated, i had one do that to me some time ago, i guess the fan seized, it wasnt long after that i noticed my computer sitting off when it had just been on not too long before, and a distict burning smell, didnt ruin anything else though
