I've got an old desktop, with an Athlon 1800+, 512MB DDR 2700 RAM, on my Asus A7N8X-Deluxe...

It's got a CDRW, DVD-R, a 160GB HD, and a 120 GB HD...

6 Case Fans, A fan over the CPU, and Ti4200... (I think)

After putting it in the basement for like 3 months... I took it out to give to a friend...

But when we tried to start it up, it just shuts down... doesn't even go as far as posting.

I pulled everything out, Air-Dusted everything.. Put it back..

It seems to work with most of the stuff plugged in, but not with everything plugged in.

It used to work... I used to have my Comp on 24/7... So I'm worried that maybe it's just the power supply failing me? I can't remember the wattage, but I think it's like 400 or 450?

Hmm... Edit: The fan in the power supply isn't spinning either...

There you go..I'm assuming the PSU fans dont spin up at all even during that brief period that the rig is on?

Nope... doens't spin at all... looks like i need a new PSU.

But, why would the PSU work for most of, but not all of my parts?

Is it likely that this is my only problem?

Since the needle of suspicion does point to the PSU, I wouldn't risk frying anything else with it - if you could get another PSU to test the rig with before you buy, that would probably be best.

If the power supply is weak or overheating (likely with the fans not spinning), it may be working but not be producing enough power for all of the components to be plugged in at the same time.

any recommendations? I've never bought a stand-alone PSU before. I always just made sure the case i was buying had enough juice for what i wanted to put in it...

Suggestions on wattage, brand, where to buy?

Definitely - TAGAN 480.
When I opened the box to mine - i got all confused and my knees went weak.

When I fitted it and switched it on, I got all worried that isn't wasn't working properly, cos things were just too quiet!!!!!
it was working properly

Just bought one of these.

Dead quiet, has 2 sata power leads, 24 pin mb connector/20 pin adapter, 4 pin 12v, 6 pin pci-x, extra hardware (uses a slot) to keep up to 4 fans running for a couple of minutes after shutdown.

A lot of these PSUs have fans over the top... is it a problem if my case is covered there? My last PSU only had that one fan that came out the back. I don't have the tools (or the expertise) to be able to cut a hole in the top. Or am I supposed to install it upside down? Or is it supposed to be for a sideways desktop, as opposed to a straight up tower?
