Power supply issue, motherboard issue, or neither?

A couple weeks ago, a problem began with my PC. I would shut down in XP, and while my screen would go blank, my power light would stay on and my hard drive light would also stay on -- although there was no hard drive activity. This happened every time I tried to shut it down for the past two weeks. I figured my old drive was going.

Then a couple of days ago, it suddenly wouldn't post. The power would come on (and stay on), the hard drive light would stay lit -- but it wouldn't post. No RAM count, video card info, nothing.

Now, the power turns off instantly. I hit the power button and it immediately turns on/off. Usually I've found this to be either a short or, or a power supply or motherboard issue. I've taken out all IDE cables, unplugged all power cables to drives, taken out all my PCI/AGP cards and taken out the memory. The problem persists. So now I'm thinking it's either a motherboard or a power supply issue. I have an Antec Sonata case/power supply -- so I'd be surprised if such a nice PS would go dead. My motherboard is an ASUS P4P800.

I wish I had another PS to try here, but I don't at the moment.. any suggestions/advice/comments anyone?

So I tested another power supply and the same problem is happening.

It just seems weird this kind of thing would happen with a motherboard issue.
