power supply for p180

I recommend against modular. Hard-wired is more reliable. Just tie the excess back with zip ties. But the modstream cables are long enough if you insist on chancing it...

OCZ is having some pretty good supply's built for themselves.

Zepper is giving you the dope on modular supply's.

Some brands, Antec in paticular have had problems with their modular models.

I have used several modular OCZ's in builds that the guy wanted OCZ and so far so good.

One thing I do like about the OCZ's is that they really stand behind their products.

Nice solid build...Stable rails, but most people will steer you away from modular.

My P180 came from Monarch with this. Both mobo connectors (Tyan 2865) are on the top side of motherboard; the only way they could be farther away from the PSU cage is if they were located *outside* the case. The 24 pin cable reaches ok, but it appears there is an extension on the 8 pin cable. This is an EPS (workstation) PSU, which may not fit your needs anyway.

I personally always recommend Fortron/Sparkle...I have used just about everthing out there and like them the best.

Yeah PC Power & Cooling are killer power supplys...The price is a killer also...Another thing that urks me is that rumor control mill has it that they use Forton and some other manufacturers to provide most of the componets and upgrade them to their specs.

One of the reasons I am so high on Fortron is because they are one of the few power supplys that are actual manufacturers and not some company that just "rebags" a supply and slaps their name on them.

Engineering and build quality are right there with the best and better than all but one in my humble opinion anyway.

Not all modular psu are bad. Many are though. You cant go by brand only either. From what I have been seeing you have to go by model. Some models are good and some arent for each given company. The modular units are getting better but many people are still leary of them. If you want a modular unit then you need to choose carefully or you'll probably have problems. Most people avoid the modular psu just to avoid problems altogether.

Hi illuzi0nz:

http://www.enermaxusa.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=21_45

From Silent PC Review:
CABLES AND CONNECTORS

There are a total of ten cable sets in the 620W model. The main ATX cable and the +12V AUX cable are not detachable.
All cables are sleeved up to the first connector, except for the lower half of the AUX cable.

* 22" cable for main 20+4-pin ATX connector
* 22" auxiliary 4+4-pin 12V AUX connector
* 26" cable for monitoring the internal fan speed
*3 x 28" cable with two 4-pin IDE drive connectors and two SATA drive connectors
* 2 x 33" cable with two 4-pin IDE drive connectors, two SATA drive connectors, and one floppy connector
* 2 x 21" 6-pin auxiliary power connector for PCI Express

Its mostly modular, the cable lengths are long and well ... Its Enermax.

Almost any PSU from http://www.Zippy.com will have long enough cables (22"+ on mobo cables and 21" to first connector on drive cables, but some of them aren't going to be very quiet. The HG2 series should cover most any system and are a quieter than the HP2 series (unless you order the optional thermal fan controller).
. If you do get the HP2 series, it is easy to remove the supplied fan and get one with the speed sensor wire and bring the leads out with the rest of the wiring and connect it to a manual controller. That's one mod that I do as I like to monitor the second most important fan in my confuser. Or you can get that NMB 92mm fan from sidewindercomputers.com which has its own thermal controller that would be more than adequate for a zippy PSU, but you would have to mount it outside the PSU box with an 80-92mm adapter. I'm going to try that now on my Zippy on the advice of G-Y - the fan adapter is "on the way". It's a neat idea for any PSUs w/ 80mm fans w/ no speed control or tach lead. Besides I think it would look cool to geeks. Bring the fan lead right into the PSU thru the fan adapter.
. Oh, another option is the Sparkle FSP550-60PLG or the FSP550PLG-SLI. Both are about $85. via Froogle + shipping and tax of course... IMO, the best $85. you can spend on a PSU. Active PFC and full range AC tolerance. Makes your PC pretty immune to line-side garbage even w/o an UPS.

This is my weapon of choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104973
This is the same unit as Zepper's Sparkle.

You may find it cheaper too. Ugly as sin, but very powerful and stable and a great match for my P180. Cables/connectors are plentiful and plenty long enough. The psu has a single rear exhaust fan but the chamber in the P180 has a 120mm fan that directly feeds the vents on the 60PLN keeping it cool and quiet. It is like they were made for each other....
