Whats the rest of your system like? Depending on your other components you may be able to.

What is model of the power supply? You will need to make sure the 12v Rail has enough amps for that card as well.

Yes, that really depends on what the rest of your system looks like, and also the model of PSU. Some cheap 400W PSUs are really crappy, and are in reality only like 250W. Also, many older power supplies (before high-end GPUs started drawing such large amounts of current on the 12V rail) were 5V-heavy instead.

My system is fine with the Corsair VX 450W PSU, which has 33A on the 12V rail.

^Exactly, is it a PSU from some pre-fabbed Dell or Acer, or is it a decent PSU from a name brand.

LOL, if it were from a Dell, he'd be fine. You don't know much about Dell, do you?

The point was most pre-fabbed units would have a useless power supply because they just need to run the basics.

EDIT: I retract my snippy comment, after actually looking into Dell PSUs.

That depends on what other stuffs you have plugged into the PSU, and the age of the PSU.

If it is new, haven't overclock, less than 3 USB plug in at once, less than 4 fans, no fancy lights, and 1-2 HDDs, then yes.

What you need to be careful is if your PSU have 1 PCI-E power cord. Mixing it with the molex cords may not create enough amps to push the card.

My PSU unit is a 3 year old Antec SL400
If I am reading the label correctly it has 18A on the 12v.

corsair 400CX yes.

Your PSU Hell No.

Your PSU is a 216w as far as its 12v rail. 12V 18A = 216W, calling it a 400w is bullshit

for example

Corsair 400CX 12v 30A = 360W on the 12v rail

6 years on a tech forum so why all the vagueness? you should know that a power supply is for the whole system so list your specs when making a thread like this. heck you were even asked to list your specs and still never did.

Are you sure there is not a second 12v rail or something. I have an Acer with a generic 300 watt PSU and it says 20 amps combined on the 12V rail. I would think your PSU would be a lot better than mine.

I just looked at the online spec sheets.
It's a really cheap PSU.

* * +5V and +3.3V combined output: 240Watts max.
* * +5V, +3.3V and +12V combined output: 380Watts max

It's not even a real 400w PSU.
