My 6 plus yr old power supply fan is getting ready to kick the bucket. It's making a terrible noise and stops completely from time to time. Since it's in a system I'm about to give to the kids, I don't care what it is replaced with.

My question is: Do this things come in different sizes and what should I replace it with? I think the fan is inside of the power supply case. How much troulbe are they to get out of there?

It's from a PS that came w/ a 486 DX2 66 (remember those?) and like I said it is at least 6 yrs old maybe as old as 7.

It is almost definitely an 80mm. Getting into it isn't too hard if you can grab a phillips-head screw driver and rotate clockwise. Just don't lick anything in there. Being that old it could be a different size, just measure it (in cm) when you open it up. If you've got about $30-40 lying around, just get a shiny new one.

GroundOO;
temporary insanity indeed! screws are removed by COUNTER clockwise rotation! {unless they are LEFT HAND threaded; very rare. never seen on PCs}

brewerbob;
if your fan measures 101mm from center of screw to center of screw DIAGNOLLY you do indeed have a 80mm fan [or 71mm screw to screw along the edges]. don't open the PS until you have a proper replacement; then make sure that the PS has been unplugged for a real long time.
