Power supply failure...

Hello,

I just got a new power supply, an Antec PP-412X 400W. I swapped out my old generic 300W and it worked fine for several days. About 20 minutes ago, I turn my computer on, and it doesn't turn on. The fans spin for about a second but then immediately stopped. I tried my old power supply, and it works fine.

I'm not quite sure why this happened. Before I went to bed last night, I unplugged two fans in the case, but that was done with the power supply switched to off, and I doubt that could have fried the PS.

What seems strange to me is that the power supply "works" for a second or so. This seems to go against other power supply issues I've heard about where the system does not start at all. Any ideas? Should I just RMA it?

RMA it.

There are usually protection circuits(failsafe) built into the PSU's.
That is what you are seeing. You turn it on and a few milliseconds later
the protection circuit kicks in.

hmm...@ first i figured something inside ur computer's being short cicruited.....like any bare wires and such......but if it works fine w/ the 300W...RMA...give them a detailed description....

I have the same problem, I have a Duron 1.2 and a ECS K7S5A with Generic PC100 (2 sticks). I have 2 power supplys, and they both exhibit the same problem as the original poster -- fans run for a sec, then shut down. Before today, the first power supply (Duro 400W - came with those $30 cases in hot deals a little while ago) worked fine, no problems at all, used it maybe 15 times. at this time I was using a K7T Turbo with the Duron 1.2 and 2 sticks of ram.

I got the ECS mobo to replace it, and swapped it in. Now I have the same problem as the original poster, with both the Duro PS and with a New PowMax 400W that I just opened 10 minutes ago to test the setup. Anyone have any ideas about this? I doubt that both power supplies are bad, especially since I just opened the PowMax.

I've read (and experienced) that the ECS board is finicky about PSUs. Both your units may not be bad per se, but they just may not play well with that board. Watch that Powmax's heat level. I had one burn up on me, but my case was really stuffy so it was really hot.

looks like RMA might be a good choice.
