power supply DUAL + 12V question

what exactly is this DUAL + 12V thingy, is is really nessacary for modern system,s because there price difference is huge between psu's with or without thus DUAL + 12V

About the only current motherboard that STRONGLY reccommends a daul 12v is the DFI Lanparty NF4 boards. No boards REQUIRE it, aside from multi-CPU server boards.

There is definitely a movement in this direction though. Besically it provides 2 completely separate 12v rails, one for the CPU and one for 'everything else'. Ultimately this should give better stability.

exactly, because the extra graphics card will need more power, it is necessary to get a dual 12v solution. (I have a DFI lanparty SLi-DR)

if you are going to get a dual rail psu, i think the fortron blue storm 500 is the best bang/buck and is high quailty. (except for the xclio that i think they stopped making)

i dont think the blue storm will be able to power future sli video card systems.. the next ones coming from nvidia are power hungry. if the gtx model is indeed the only one that you can do sli they are recommending 34 amps on 12 volt rail. then you have to power everything else you have. i suspect the blue storm wont cut it. i think its great for non sli system though.

Don't get the SLI-DR. First of al, SLI is a waste. Second of all, if you REALLY want SLI, then just get the DFI Lanparty Ultra-D and mod it to SLI.

im using default cooling. if i recall correctly two silencers wont fit on dfi sli motherboard. not enough space between the slots. other wise i would invest in one.

Dual rails is the new standard. ALL mobos will conform soon enough. the 34 amp rating is the combined peak rail rating, not a single rail rating.
