Before I present the choices, understand that I'm getting an Antec, regardless. No Seasonic- pimping, PC&C-toting around here, please 🙂

That said:

Antec SP 500W or Antec TP 430W?

They're both plenty to power my machine, and fairly similar in price (although Newegg has a rebate on the TP, which makes it about 12 dollars cheaper all said and done).

I know the TP series seems to be favored...would I be happier going that route if I'll never miss those extra 70W offered by the SP?

why are you being exclusive to Antec?
Theyre great sure, but imo others are better.

That said, what rig will this be powering?
 
What is your budget? But I would suggest Fortron for on the budget PSUs. They are solid, and don't comprimise quality.

Antec, simply because I've always used them without any problems, and they fit my budget. I wouldn't be at all opposed to trying out Seasonic, etc., but the price difference isn't worth it to me.

To me, it is. I've went the PSU hell with many Enermax PSUs (they aren't bad, but I was killing it by over-amping it). Went with dual Seasonics, and I couldn't be happier. But you don't think it is worth it until you have the bad stuff happen to your PSU (and then the whole computer).

 
Look at the Fortron AX500-A
Theres plenty of slack on all the cables in my standard mid-tower case, so I'd guess it'd work in the P180

Just for kicks...would you choose a Fortron 400W over either of the two choices listed in my first post?

I'm running an Antec 350W right now. It's running my system without any problems so far, but I know it's right at the minimum you'd want to use. Plus, it's 20 pin, and I'd feel better using a 24.
 
Right...that's the 500. I've considered the Fortron AF 450...it's dirt cheap. I don't know, though...I have a hard time believing that it's any better than the Antec TPII 430.
 
Antec used to be the goldenboy of PSU's on this forum...the current champ here seems to be Seasonic (for good reason). I went with an Antec Truepower 330 a few years ago...it exploded about 2 months later. Fortunately, it was covered under warranty, and the replacement has worked well (though I now use it only as a backup PSU). Amazing how one bad experience will color your whole opinion of an otherwise well thought of product. Meanwhile, I have a Fortron on another PC that I bought about the same time that has run 24/7 since install and is QUIET and stable. Just one story, but it changed what I buy. I think Antec makes a good product, but I think there are others out there that make equally good products at less of a premium.
 
I read on these forums that Antec rates their psus at 30 degrees Celsius, while Fortron does so at 40, and PC Power and Cooling and Seasonic rate theirs at 50 degrees.

So a lesser powered Fortron might be equivalent to a more optimistically rated Antec, from a purely spec point of view.
