Power supply cables too short

The cables on my power supply are so short. Is this a common problem?

The main cpu cables to the motherboard are barely long enough to connect, and the SATA connectors - forget about it. Nowhere near enough room to hook up 2 hard drives and a dvd burner.

What do people do in these situations?
 
Is it a cheap PSU?

You can always get extensions or change your mounting situation / tower, if possible.
