I was building a system for my bro's friend.
It contains:
ATHLON XP 1800+
FIC mobo kt-266a based
256mb pc2100
80gb ibm 120gxp
cd-rom and floppy
msi 64mb gf4 ti4200
sb live!
ndc 10/100 ethernet
56k modem
win xp

raidmax aluminum case w/320 watt power supply
neon accent light
7 fans (3 case, 1 cpu fan, 1 chipset fan, 1 vga fan, 1 power supply fan)

It was just built today, the only overclocking i did was the vga card (i did set it to 300/600). I was running 3d mark 2k1 for the first time and there were no artifacts or ne thing. I then noticed that the neon light began to flicker. At about the last pixel shader test with the fish and lake, i was screwing in a thumb screw for the side panel when the computer just turned off. The computer then wouldn't turn on. I switched off the power supply and when i switched it back on, there was spark flash in the case. The computer no longer boots, every time i take out and plug in the power cable to the power supply and turn on the comp, the fans begin to spin for about a millisec and stop. I unplugged all the uneccesary things for the computer and tried booting, but it still didn't work. Do u think the ps blew out? Thanks.

320W would probably be pushing it a little bit, but enough to make the PSU explode like that... there was probably something wrong with it in the 1st place.

Would it make a difference in that when i was screwing in the thumbless screw, i was sitting on carpet, but i wasn't moving to conduct static electricity. And since the case is aluminum, it could conduct, would that be possible?

Any metal case conducts electricity, not just aluminum ones. It should be fine, since the whole case should be grounded when it is plugged in.

If you wanna see if the PS is dead or not, just unplug it from everything, put a paper clip or a metal wire between the green wire and a black wire at the motherboard connector, and plug it into an ac outlet. If the PS fan doesn't run, then most likely it's dead.
Better, more detailed instructions with diagrams!!!

But from the how you described it, it's more than likely dead. :(

I popped in my antec 300 watt ps and it booted fine. So it is the ps. Still surprised that the ps blew! Shouldn't it just like turn off or something, but not kill itself? Anyway, now i need to focus on getting a replacement. I bought the case (BTW it comes with the 320 watt power supply, 2 case fans, and the 12 volt neon light as a kit) from a local comp store. All the extra fans (cpu fan, chipset fan, vga fan, and extra case fan) connect to the motherboard and not to the power supply. It is an athlon xp setup tho, not an intel setup. All the other things that connect to the motherboard are standard (cd-rom, floppy, hdd, mobo). Do u think i have a case for getting a replacement and not paying $50 for another ps?

if you just bought this power supply then there is no question. You did nothing wrong with the set up so it was a faulty power supply.
