power supply atx 24pin -> 20pin question

might be a noob question and possibly I did something stupid.

I bought a new ps since my old one died, but I noticed it has a 24pin connector for the motherboard. I'm able to remove part of it 4pins to make it into a 20pin connector which fits into the motherboard. the pc turns on and works fine

but do I need to use the 24pin -> 20pin adapter to connect to a 20pin motherboard?
if the adapter is needed why make 4pins of the 24 pin connector removable?

anyone know?

You would only need the 24 pin to 20 pin adaptor if the 4 pins weren't removable, which is how some of the 24pin PSU's come.

You have a 20+4 connector on your PSU. 20pin for 20pin motherboards, then that extra 4pins on the side that are removable. If you need the extra 4pins, if not then just take them off the connector.

You are completely fine. Even if the extra 4 pins were not removable, the only reason to use an adapter would be if a component on the board (capacitor, etc.) prevents connecting a 24-pin connector directly.
