Power Supply Advice

I am looking for a super silent power supply with at least 550-600 watts of power, so far I am looking at the Enermax MODU82+ 625w and the OCZ 600W ModXstream Pro, has anyone used them before, or have a better suggestion? I am in Canada, and would like to spend under 150CAD. Right now I am using the OCZ GameXstream 600W, but its fan is awfully loud, making a notable higher pitch sound so I would like something very quiet to replace it.

Thanks.

thanks for the replies, I am not sure if 520watts would be enough for me or at least it would be on the edge. My current OCZ is still under warranty, but I don't think there is anything wrong with it, its fan is just a tad too noisy for me.

What do you guys make of the enermax PRO82+ vs MODU82+, is the only difference being the MODU82+ being modular with everything else the same? I have read good things on the silence of those 2 enermax units, do you guys think it is the most silent unit out there?

Why not give us your rig's specs? Get better advice that way.

Have you considered replacing the noisy fan? I had to do that with an Enermax I had.

Well replacing the fan himself would void his warranty.

yes the MODU and PRO enermax PSUs are basically the same except for modular cabling. Most reviews talk about how quiet they are. Whether or not you need it to be that quiet, or if they are the quietest around....I can't say.

sorry about that, forgot to put out my specs.
QX6850
P5Q vanilla
4GB mushkin HP2
4870 1GB
caviar se16 640gb
asus xonar d2
ocz 600w gamexstream
cooler master cosmos 1000 case

Everything is stock for the moment being.

After some price checking, the lowest price I can find on the HX520 is 109CAD online and 130 locally, the PRO82+ is 124CAD online and locally, and the MODU82+ is 140CAD online and locally. I am thinking I should probably spend a little more to get more power just for the added head room right?

No, I'm not using one; however, when I get a new PSU it's on my short list.

Your system is nowhere close to maxing out the HX520.

Another great PSU worth considering - PC Power & Cooling 610w

Edit - Review for ya - Link, and a Canadian review no less! =)

Edit #2 - Oops, forgot that you said you wanted silence. The above is supposed to be quite silent until you get it heavily loaded, then it's not so much. I think you'll be fine with your listed hardware though.

Thanks for all the replies and help, < Enthusiast in their review of the MODU82+ stated it was the quietest power supply ever tested to date:
http://www.hardocp.com/article...w5LCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

The AT review was also very favourable with the noise level:
http://www.anandtech.com/casec...owdoc.aspx?i=3270&p=13

but no one is recommending it here, so I am a bit undecided. Initially I felt it might be a good idea to grab a unit with more power for some headroom and to allow for future upgrades or additions but now I am not so sure.

EDIT: I don't know how I got the post highlighted sorry about that

Check out the BFG ES-800. Currently has a $40 US Rebate.

Excellent reviews - Hardware Canucks, Hardocp

Quote from the HardOCP review:

The BFG ES-800 features a 138mm fan that can start at voltages as low as 3v, and it is coupled with a unit that has excellent efficiency so things are certainly starting off in a ?can't lose? situation in regards to the noise output from this unit. As it turns out, that was indeed what happened, the unit was quiet and by quiet it was subjectively quieter than any 800w unit we have had in for testing to date by a wide margin. Furthermore, subjectively, this unit was one of the quietest units we have tested to date at any power level. Users seriously considering a quiet power supply for just about any application should seriously look to the ES-800 as its feature set resulted in a power supply that quite simple was the sound of silence.

Plus lifetime warranty to boot, and BFG is supposed to have excellent customer service as well. Just installed mine yesterday, so far so good. Air coming out the back of it is cool and can't hear it at all.

Thanks for the suggestion OCNewbie, that one looks really good, the lifetime warranty sounds great!! I'm gona check it out.

Pretty sure that deal died today. I believe that was 12/19 only, hopefully I'm wrong =)
