Power Steering Unit + pump

My 1999 Prelude (base) had been making noise for a while when turning. Today it got worse and the steering almost was jammed. I got it in to the Honda Dealer and he told me that the whole steering unit is broken. He said it needs two steering pumps and the rack and pinion unit. I was quoted 1300 bucks for parts and labor. What do you think of this price. Is he over charging me? Will I be able to save some money if I took it elsewhere?
thanks for ne response

Dealer prices are always pretty steep - both their labor rate (typically $80+/hour) and the fact that they use genuine parts drives the high prices. Find a local mechanic - you can probably have it done for 50-70% of that price.

Don't take you car to the stealer. You'll get rape. Go to an independent local mechanic shop you trust and get a free estimate. Don't be afraid to shop around. I'll bet you the the indepndent shop will be half the price.

I called up firestone service and they quoted 1700 bucks for parts & labor. The problem is that the car is not in the driveable condition. The steering is stuck so I have to get it towed from one place to the other.

Two pumps? Are they smoking crack? Yes, the work will be expensive since racks are not cheap by any means.

So u think that the price seems fine. The thing is if I'm saving only couple hundred bucks then I would rather get it done at the Honda dealer. This way I will not have to get it towed to the other place.

Well, I don't know what exactly they intend to replace but a rack is about $700 and a pump is about $400 (these are dealer wholesale prices). Seems for the price they'll be doing some rebuilding, not replacing.

EDIT: for $1300 you could get yourself a longblock😛
