I set up a small ftp server of my computer. I'd like to minimize the power that my computer uses when I'm not using it, but other people are uploading or downloading. So, what power options should I use in Windows XP Pro or in the BIOS?

To save significantly on power the computer need to go into a stage that it is not used (like Hibernation).

There is No way to save significantly on power while the computer is actually active doing something.

You can Switch off the peripheral. Monitor Printer Scanners etc.

That sucks. I was hoping to reduce power consumption while running the server and doing nothing else.

any particular reason? Your computer isnt costing you much per month, only a few bucks, especially assuming it has no monitor and only a few drives. If this is too costly for you, then you need to not have the extra computer as an ftp server.

If its an older system, its VERY cheap, a 350-400 watt psu running at max 24/7 for a month is $15-20 (and thats with 7 or so cents per kW/h) search google, you will see how muchi t costs, keep in mind most charts show if its running at 100% utilization all the time, your cpu and drives are just sitting idle i'd bet 97% of the time...

if its just to be a good citizen and save power....your SOL, but i'll take your puter :)

My particular reason is that my parents strictly scrutinize the power bill and don't like it when it increases. And actually, I'm not using an extra computer, I set up my desktop to handle it. I'm not expecting a lot of traffic, since it's only open to a really small number of people, around 10. Anonymous logins are not allowed.

if they are that strict about it....i feel bad for you!

http://www.broadbandreports.com/faq/2404

that is the DSL reports article i was talking about, lets assume your computer is a 350 watt PSU, 400 for shits and giggles...your gonna be $20/mo depending on your electricity cost, its $.06 per kW/hr in the example, it is $.034 where i live....so im already at 1/2 their estimate, and thats assuming 100% utilization, basically what im saying is, if your parents care that much, tellt hem you will pay for the extra $1-3 per MONTH to leave it on. If you dont turn your monitor off then you got other isuses because the monitor uses a boatload...just turn it off if your not using it, i have a dual setup and often only leave one on.
