I need to do a lot of 2-D graphics work. However, I don't have an unlimited supply of money (isn't that always the case?). Can I get some suggestions for system components, esp motherboards, intel/amd, smp, how much ram, SCSI/IDE/RAID? Thanks.
 
Well... I don't know what exactly you should get for MB, Proc or whatever, but you will probably want a Matrox G550 or G450 if all you are going to be using the computer for is 2d.
 
You s/b able to build a good system for that money if you go single processor. The Epox Ep-8K7A is a good DDR board that gets a lot of hype in the forums and I have like my experience with it. That does require DDR memory be purchased, but you can get 512 Mb of that for only $120 at crucial.com. The processor s/b maybe a T-bird 1.133 or 1.2 GHz (266 MHz FSB of course). The video suggestions here for 2D are fine. Do whatever you want for sound card and modem. This should give you maybe a place to start. Have fun!

This is just one of many different paths you can take. More info is needed for more specifics, like Athlon or Intel? DDR or SDRAM? High performance sound? Video? How much storage? Want RAID?
 
What kinda performance boost am I gonna see from SMP? Is a single processor decent for 2-D work? Also, is a P4 gonna serve my needs better than the athlon?
 
I think Athlon is better as I believe it has an edge over P4, where P4's are more for multimedia type of processes and they cost you a buttload of cash.

It's not to say GeForces are bad at 2D, but more to the effect that there not the best. Radeon's from what I've researched have way better 2D and Matrox's have the best 2D, HOWEVER there 3D is reported to be abysmal to nonexistent. Personally, I think Radeon's will give you the 2D performance while also allowing you to work with 3D. My opinions are not professional however, so if anyone more experienced and knowledgable about this care to throw in there lot?
