Oh and a single 80gb ide drive. Ya think 400W will suffice? Anyone have the same specs? Better yet can anyone explain how I can work out the actual under load power requirements of whatever hardware I like?

The reason i ask is I upgraded my 1700+ to a 3000+ and encountered strange failures. COULD have been overheating but I was thinking borderline power requirement because it would crash between 10 mins and 1 hour in the most intensive 3d games. Put the 1700+ back in and it's stable as can be once more. Is power the likely culprit here or, when it comes to power supply, will a system simply run or not run?

I suppose the cpu could be faulty also but that seems unlikely.

So yeah, now i'm upgrading a mate's pc and i want to be sure, of course.

500W? Is that a joke? A properly running 300W PSU would handle that system easily. Don't believe me, search the forums for about a dozen other threads of people who connected power meters to their computers and were "shocked" that the 500W PSU is all gimmick.

Long story short: Buy any power supply that actually works. Get one with a good warranty in case you get a lemon.

One of my systems is a SFF system with only 250 watt power supply. This system contains: P4 2.4c @ 3.2 ghz, 1 gb ram (3-3-3-6 & 166 divider, stock voltage), 6800gt (overclocked to ultra speeds), PCI soundcard, 250gb Harddrive, CD/DVD Combo Drive, and a DVD-rw. Stable & no power issues at all, you should be fine at 300 watts as long as it's a quality power supply.

ASUS P4T-533C
2 x 512MB RD1066
*EVGA 6800GT AGP*
SoundBlaster Audigy
2 x 7200rpm HD
2 x DVD/CD-RW
1 x Floppy

ive been meaning to ask this for a long time-- is there an accurate way to tell how much power your system consumes? I am kind of wary of hearing I have to add 100w to my system after every upgrade. I mean sure, the MFR's have a recommended PSU wattage minimum, but how do you verify this?

Exactly.

Antec 400W, if you need more info i can get it. Sounds like it should be fine though. What do you mean by wattage means very little? Why are they rated by wattage then?

Damn, that cpu i mentioned must be bad i guess, or perhaps the hsf wasn't up to the task. Does a 3000+ generate more heat than a 1700+?

There's no standard on what's considered a watt on a PSU. Cheap makers will inflate their wattage numbers while name brands deflate their numbers. So maybe a 350w name brand is the same as a 520w cheap PSU.

Indeed, I understand the importance of not cheaping on the psu after reading a THG article on it.

What 3dmark2005 score do you get with that system Sang?

Its all about effiency(sp?). Antec (for example) Ususally have higher effiency than generic ones. For example antac 380W with 80% effiency VS generic 400W with 60% effiency. Your generic one doesnt look so good now eh?

Also I'm running a Venice @ 2.4 GHz with 2*512MB DDR DIMMS, 3 Harddrives, 1 DVD-RW Radein 800XL on a 380W Antec. I'm sure a 350W antec would do this system just fine.
