ok Im just complaining, i get this spiffy new 2.4 P4 to put in my computer and it dosent work, its not compatible. Ok so no biggie i just sold it to a friend and took his 1.8. (1.3 >>1.8 not a bad upgrade). so i put the new chip and HS/F in and guess what my tornado no longer fits in the back of the case. And that was my main sorce of cooling it :| and i has a slow fan in the front that was just barly keeping the system from melting down and the fan was blowing air out the front. thats not so bad as it was the only fan running in this now oven of a computer. So I open the case to just let most if it cool that way. So today I figure out a way to rig up my tornado into the front of the case and move the slow fan to the back so at least there will be something going out. After i get everything hooked back up, and powerup during the RAID post the Hard Drives shut off then trun back on (not good) :frown: oops HS/F is pluged into the same 12V cable as the Hard Drives. Move the cable. Reboot, get into windows Hard Drive shut down then start back up, COMPUTER CRASHES :disgust: Great now with my nice 1.8Ghz CPU i cant even run my Tronado and Fan controller with out the compuetr crashing. becasue the Hard Drives dont get enough power. O well time to get a new PS.

Anyone know where I can get a 380W or 400W PS for a Dell Dimension 8100, my 350W isnt cutting it anymore.

I am not very familiar with P4 systems, but it seems to me that this is probably an issue with some hardware other than the PSU. I don't think a 500MHz jump in processor speed makes all that much difference in the amount of power required but the PC. Maybe I'm mistaken, and I am sure someone will let us know, but I'd try looking elswhere first. Make sure everything is seated properly. Also, AFAIK it doesn't matter which physical "string" each device is plugged into. A device using the 12V rail is using the same 12V rail as any other device, regardless of what "string" the molex is connected too.

true, but I have had this problem before, if i keep the HDD's on thier own string, the system will run a whole lot more stable and not have this HDD shut down problem. Last time it did this I almost lost my RAID and almost had to redo the sytem and i had no back up'd files. when i had my 1.3 if i put the HDD's on one string the CD-RW and DVD drives on another string and the Floppy and Fan controller with fans on another sting the system would run fine with that set up but if it was changed then i would have Problems. its my system it has Issues.

Probably mobo related as DElls and most oem makers are famous for quirky stuff that leads to almost no upgrading on your own...

Now it appears you have a mobo that is socket 423 that went with you first p4 1.3ghz which was a willamette chip. No wonder the 2.4ghz was not compatable as it is a socket 478 and is .13 micron, 512kb of l2 cache,etc....Did you notice when you tried to drop the pins into the holes???

I do guarantee that the power supply they had was likley bare minimum for the system you were running. Get a antec true power 330watt or greater and you ahould be just fine...

so the converter allows you to fit a socket 478 on a socket 423?? So you are running a northwood 512kb l2 cache chip??? There is a good chance the mobo needs a bios update to work correctly with the chip. Does it find the vcore of 1.5v or is it setting hit at 1.75 or higher??? Check that out as that would show if there is possible system incompatabilities.

I have the newest BIOS from DELL, I got a BIOS updater with the converter, but it didnt have my Intel board BIOS updates in the updater. So it didnt update the BIOS ( it still works with the 1.8) As for the voltage Im not sure. My BIOS Really sucks. I cant monitor or change anything. Change date and time, add/remove Drives, and set a BIOS Password is about all that I can change or monitor on this BIOS. I really hate it.
