Power Problem - PC won't boot

I had a problem with my PC shutting down randomly, and figured that the problem was the power supply. I went to the store, bought a new power supply, and now the problem is worse than before. With the new power supply, the computer turns on for about 6-8 seconds, and then shuts off. It does not even beep to indicate there is a video card. It shuts down before that.

With the old power supply, I get nothing now. The computer will not even turn on. I'm in a much worse state than I was before I started messing with this. At least before, the computer would boot up sometimes. Now, I cannot do anything.

I have a rather old computer with a Pentium 266 and a Abit LX6 Motherboard. Could this new power supply be incompatible with this old system? The new power supply is an Antec Smart Power 300 Watt ATX 12V.

What could I be doing wrong? I have the ATX plug going into the motherboard, and all the CD ROM and hard drives are plugged in. There's nothing else to do.

 
I have seen the POWER SWITCH go bad occassionally. (mostly on AST & Compaqs)

Hold the Button IN while it is powering up.
If it powers up while holding it in release it and see if it quits.

If the switch is shorting it will reset the PC randomlly also.

 

I got a new power switch too. This is actually the problem. I have to push the button 2 times to keep the power on. If I only push it once, the computer shuts down right away. I don't understand why this happens, but pushing it twice does solve the problem.
 
Probably the wrong type of switch.

The ATX Power only requires a Momentary Switch (normally open)
Older AT Power switches where Push once (closed or on), Push twice (open or off).

Does it click each time you push the switch?
 
Yes, it clicks both times, but its definitely an on/off type switch. It has an in and out position. I'm going to get a different one.
