[Power PC] Apple Users! Post your build - setup

As you already know, I have 5 PowerPC machines. One is a 1.25 GHz iMac with 2 GB RAM, and another is a 1.7 GHz Cube with upgraded GPU.

However none of them are usable in 2016.

You might be able to BARELY use a dual G5 Power Mac but even that wouldn't be pleasant.

Really what you need is an Intel machine.

I'd doubt the viability of even a top spec G5 PowerMac. IIRC, the OG Core Duo MacBook was competitive in terms of performance to it.

sadly i think this is not the right forum for collectors

I have a Core Duo 2.0 iMac as well. See the picture he quoted (from another thread). That pic has 5 PowerPC Macs and the Core Duo iMac.

The Core Duo would be OK for basic surfing if it could run a current version of OS X. However, Apple won't allow it, so it's stuck on 10.6, which is a problem for security and current browsers. But at least it has 2 GB RAM and runs Mac OS X 10.6 and supports a current version of Firefox so it's tolerable. The Power Macs max out Mac OS X 10.5, which means no current version of any of the three major browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox) will run on it. That's one of the reasons I said trying to run even a dual G5 wouldn't be pleasant.

Nothing wrong with collecting the PowerPC Macs. However, just don't expect to actually get any meaningful use out of them.

Ironically though, the NAS I use every single day is run off PowerPC. It is a Synology DS413 running the latest version of Synology DSM OS.
