Power outage **Update**

The power went out two towns over yesterday, now the power is out in my city (Lansing, MI). I wonder if something is going on with oil/gas and such. Has there been anything about power outages in the Midwest as a result of Katrina on the news?

🙁 My laptop is almost out of battery life.

not that i know of but then i haven't watched the news for a couple days. i'm fine in ohio

**Update**

Our exterior circuit breaker flipped. I called our emergency maintenance line twice to no avail. They said that they would do something and have someone call, but did neither. I called the electric company myself (electricity is part of my rent) and they sent a technician. He said the breaker flipped from being overloaded (there was only one lamp, the kitchen lights, one burner on the stove, the washer/drier and nothing else on in a four-bedroom, fairly new apartment). He also said the meter was "spinning like crazy". This was with the aforementioned equipment, minus the burner. I sent a nasty response through our online maintenance request.

Central Illinois here... no problems that I know of. I think Michigan just has crappy power, kind of like their roads.

Maybe something is getting grounded where it shouldn't be? If so I'd leave the breaker off. That's a potential fire hazard.

Scotty that might be bad wiring, I would have someone look at it.

What upsets me is that we (the four living in the apartment) must pay for electricity over $120. If we are charged, I will refuse to pay for electricity that is a result of negligent electrical wiring.

Had this exact proble at one of my rentals earlier this year. Hot wire to a stove had nearly broken if half. There were only 2 strands holding it in place. The load going through such a small wire caused it to overheat and burn off the insulation. It then shorted to ground causing the meter to run like crazy. I have no idea why the main breaker didn't trip.
