power on pc through usb

im not sure this is the right section for my question, but ill give it a go anyway

i have a spare ibm t60 laptop which i want to use as a media center instead of my noisy slim line shit - only problem is that the space doesnt allow the laptop to open - so i have to find alternatives ways for powering it on, and i got thinking about usb infared thingies that send a power on command to the motherboard ? i know asus has made infared recievers for their DH motherboard series (i have one myself in my current media center) but i cant use that in my t60 it says only supported by asus dh motherboard ;(

so uh pretty much, need a way to boot up my t60 without opening it - wake on lan is not an option, me powering up another pc to boot up the laptop seems.. well stupid 😉

thanks in advance!

Look in the alternate power up options in the laptop BIOS - the mobo I just got has that one available, but you have to choose the option to apply the 5VSB voltage to USB for it to work. Some desktop mobos do that by jumpers. Generally, when laptops power down, there is 0 power to the 5V line on the USB ports - IDK if they even make that option available. You'll just have to scour your BIOS settings pages to see if yours can.
