That is a function of two things. First, your BIOS should say yes to powermanagement awareness in the oS. Second, your Win98 setting in Control Panel, Power Options, should be set to enable APM.

Umm..that's amazing.............
I've done just the opposite with my PC.........
I've disabled all power mgmt options in the BIOS and in Win98(SE)
including removing Advanced Power Management support in the
System devices of the Device Manager.....
Never had a shutdown problem................Greg

It's not a shutdown problem . . . it is how to let Windows use the automatic power off to an ATX motherboard. It completely turns the power off to the board and the computer auto turns off.

If you disable APM, then you just get a screen that says it's safe to turn off the computer and you have to then do it manually.

Sorry.....the thread title says "power off after shutdown on Win98se".......
and I assumed he meant that when he's done with the PC, he clicks Start/ShutDown....
not setting power management for shutdown later.............
BTW..I have APM disabled and when I shutdown, it shutdowns completely...no hitting
the power button!

Understand, Greg. A lot of this is motherboard specific in many cases. I know guys that can't get an auto power down at all . . . if it is "turned on" (APM) it reboots. XP has more settings in this area than 98 or ME.

Tks yr advice Corky. Its actually for my brothers computer so I'll pass it along. As a matter of interest I tried to disable power off on my comp using yr advice, but no matter what I tried I was unable to disable power off. Still, that's not the current pbm. Tks again.
