Power of Prayer to Heal Illness May Be Overrated31 March, 2006

Praying for a sick cardiac patient may feel right to people of faith, but it doesn't appear to improve the patient's health, according to a new study that is the largest ever done on the healing powers of prayer.
In fact, the researchers from Harvard Medical School and five other U.S. medical centers found -- to their bewilderment -- that coronary bypass patients who knew strangers were praying for them fared significantly worse than people who got no prayers. The team speculated that telling the patients about the prayers may have caused "performance anxiety," or perhaps...

I would imagine that if you are told that people are praying for you, that this is an indication that they think you won't make it. This would no doubt cause stress.

Yeah! "Is it bad doc?" "Everyone's praying for you, John." "Oh crap!"

I am not going to argue about this, but i have personally been in situations that loved ones were VERY ill with many things such as cancer, heart problems, etc. All i am going to say is that many prayers were said and at first, what was a very grim outlook, turned to be healed.

After months of radical cancer treatments that were not working, my mom's lymphomia suddenly was not in her lungs anymore.
The doctors were stunned that it literally just disappeared.
I am not saying it was a miracle or from prayers, but i do know, many MANY people were praying heavily for her.
PS, i am not religious.

You have the understand that the typical Christian viewpoint is that your life is planned out from before you are born. Believing in this and the power of prayer is just... ignorant. If God already knew you were going to die from cancer, no amount of people praying for you is going to save you.

"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you." -John 15:7

If you're living in sin, and only ask God for help when you or a friend is dying, and that person is healed, it's only because God, for some reason or another in His perfect will wants that person to live. For some people, it's just their time to die, that's all. Prayer is not a wish list nor a drive thru ("I'll take new job, and a some healing for my buddy here") but a means of communicating with God, and if you don't approach God with the right attitude and faith, it won't do squat.

I am giving a personal opinion. i never said i was trying to prove the "study" wrong.

It should be noted that other studies have in fact found some evidence that prayer may indeed help heal. Nothing conclusive, of course, but it's enough to make you wonder.

I want to say also that it appears some of you are rooted exclusively in a material mindset and really need to awaken your spiritual senses more. Stop equating spirituality solely with religion and enlighten yourself, if only for your own information... Don't be close-minded.

sounds more like a calvinist view to me

ROFL!!!

Fine. But back in December 1979, I was two months premature when my mom gave birth to me. My prognosis wasn't good at all. So my dad got everyone he knew to pray for me. A few days later the Dr. took a look at me and told my parents, "If I wasn't the doctor who examined this baby last week I wouldn't believe it's the same baby." Such was the 180 in my condition. Believe what you want to believe, but that situation was personal. Not some survey.

Which is why personal situations are NEVER proof of anything. There are millions of people in your situation who were prayed for and didn't survive. However, they aren't around anymore to post that the prayer failed. The result? You only get personal stories on one side of the argument.

By the way, this is a multiple repost.

I often pray green lights when driving. Miracously, god hears my prays quite often and I get green lights.
