I'm considering going off-grid and powering my house by my own means. I've taken some readings of my meter, and it seems that my house uses about 100 kilowatts per 24 hours. I know that the power of a generators is measured in kilowatts... how powerful should be the generator be to be able to sustain my house's power usage?

Thank you.

My father in law is off the power grid. He has two wind generators, two solar panels, as string of float batteries, a 15kw generator, and an inverter. He's got about 25,000 dollars invested and still doesn't have enough power to air condition in the summer.

I don't know, but I would check out the alt.home-repair newsgroup for an answer. This is right up their alley. You can go through google.com if you don't have newsgroup access.

Ive had this idea about using a large battery(ies) and an device similar to an alternator for homes. Basically you would run on battery power until it runs low and then switch back to main power, which also recharges the batteries. Oh well.
