Dad's Got an AT sytem running at 500 mhz and looking to put a voodoo 5 PCI into that puppy. I think dad's running with a 235 Watt power supply.

Will i run into power problems? The only reason I ask is that I recall something like that being an issue when the voodoo 5's and GForces first came out. I just dont't know if it appied to the voodoo or the Gforce or both.

Can anyone help me out? I don't want to buy the card then find out I don't have the power for it.

I wouldn't think the computer would be loaded down so I don't see any problems you should run into

<< i thought the voodoo5's had to be plugged in with a seperate power supply?? >>

That was the unreleased V5 6000. The V5 5500 plugged directly into the PS.

the card comes w/ a "y" cable, just use one connector from ur power supply and everything'l be fine, i am running a v5 agp on a 800mhz machine, u need high speed processors to kick out the power from this card, to bring out its potential. basically anything above 500mhz should be fine, but as u upgrade ur processor later on, u'l notice performance gain, 3dmark2000 gave me a 2700 score when i clocked down my cpu to 600mhz, and gave my friend a 4100 when i tested my card on his 1.2 athlon

I posted on the Voodoo 5 chips power draw before, I think it was 18W per chip, so it'll be at least 36W. the voodoo 5 takes power from a PSU plug. I heard an asus board or agp pro slot (?) had problems with the V5 but I'm sure you don't have that. as far as I know the original Geforces were a bit greedy, like 25W which turned out for unreliable operation from some slots. if you've got an AT board I'd be more worried if you had a socket 7 VIA chipset which was known for dodgy AGP, though the V5 doesn't use AGP texturing anyway and not in a PCI slot.
good luck with a 500mhz cpu nowadays.

I have heard of people getting by with a v5 in dell L models just fine, those have that have a 150 watt power supply.
dell often uses good grade PS that are really under rated. when it comes to power supplies you just can't go by the watt rating, plus other factors come into play to like the cpu/motherboard and how power much other hardware in the system is drawing.
you won't know till ya try

Thanks so much for the heads up on Dimension L

I have 5 empty PCI slots so should not have to worry about overloading the system.

Now if I could just dig up a cheap V5 (have I missed the boat?)

yep, you kind missed the boat, try to find a GOOD used one if you can't afford a new one, good luck.
