power efficiency SB VS Penryn ?!

HI ....

all my concern now in my daily pc usage are some web browsing and media ...

i know that e8400 or even e5700 is more than enough ...

my Q : i can get a used old pc for half the price of SB .... even a pentium G620 ....

so hours and hours of usage over time !!! ...... should i pay more for a less power hungry cpu or its not a big difference !!

it is a relatively big difference. Then again, relatively speaking, it doesn't amount to much money.

How about you provide a $/kwh number which will enable people who want to go through the hassle of helping you, help you for real?

Oh, and while you're at it, you say

hours and hours of usage over time !!!

so how many hours per day on average would you say that amounts to? Oh, and over how much time?

Its actually a big difference. Specially due to power gating and a new platform with PCIe and IMC ondie. Performance wise there will also be a large difference.

The G620 will most likely use 30-40W less in idle than any of the Core 2. Load wise it might be 50W or more. Under 100% load the G620 will use less than the E5300 in idle.

So question is for you I guess, if the performance and lower utilities is worth it compared to the price difference.

My e8400 system, with an 8800gt, idled at 120w or 140w when overclocked. My current system, which is four times faster, idles at around 60w, and a G620 with no graphics card would idle at around 40w.

Assuming 8 hours of computer on-time per day, you're talking about $0.10 per day or $36 a year, just in idle time costs. Heavy usage would lead to a greater delta.

You have to scale that up or down based on your usage, and your electricity rates. I assumed $0.15 per kWh.

A general rule of thumb is that you'll pay ~$1USD per year for the privilege of using 1Whr per hour, 24hrs a day, for the entire year if you pay $0.10 per kWHr.

Obviously this can become $2USD per year or even $3 and $4 per year if you live in places with substantially elevated electricity costs.

I went from a Q6600 to a 2600k, I'd estimate my idle idle power usage fell by 60-70W. For me this resulted in ~$100/yr power savings (give or take).

Another big helper is the GPU, the new deep-idle states can really help your idle power as well.

And if all you need is a basic PC, look to Dell deals (frequently <$500 for a whole system with monitor) or Dell/Lenovo outlet deals that have systems without monitor for <$300 at times.
