My mom is moving to england and rather than have her buy the same laptop for more in England, what I'd like to do is buy it here and just get a power cord to go from the wall to power block. Any suggestions as to where I could find one of these? It'll be an Acer laptop. Thanks!

If I'm correct in my thinking, you could either use an adapter plug to fit over the existing plug so it converts the socket from U.K. to U.S. with no new cable needed. Or you could probably get a plug (for England) with a figure 8 plug at the other end to go into the adapter.

Yes, MOST laptops power adapters are Dual Voltage, meaning you won't need a power adapter, just a plug changer. RadioShack sells a set for like 10 bucks (or used to when I worked there) that has most european plugs in it.

To check to make sure the power adapter will work, just take a look at it and where it says input, if it has a broad range, like 110-240V, then you're golden.

You could look at some kind of travel kits they sell tourists. We use to buy them for use in Rome because basically it is just a transformer to go from 220 to 110. They probably sell this stuff in England at any tourist trap. Maybe even in the Airport.

Options are

1) If the laptop power brick has a removable power lead (usually they use a telefunken connector [also called figure 8] on the power lead where it connects to the brick), you can simply buy a UK telefunken lead in the UK. Should be available for a high-street electrical store.

2) If the laptop power brick has the lead permanently attached - cut the US plug off and attach a UK plug. Screw on plugs are readily available in the UK (just remember to change the fuse - plugs come with 13 A fuses in. The laptop will need a 3A fuse).

3) Use a tourist adaptor.

what I did...walked into a computer shop in a very small town in England...they had a cord that fit into my Dell brick converter, set me back 4-5 pounds. Like everyone says, all yo uneed is a cord...the converter works fine, but gets a s hot as hell with the higher voltage over there.

My Acer doesn't use the standard 8 end... it has a funky 3 point lead that I'd never seen before so check that before you buy anything. If it is an 8 then replacing the lead is the easist thing to do. I'll check my brick tonight and see if it has a braod range input. If so I'd recommend just getting a plug travel adapter.
