I would say that the optical would use some more juice since it has to power the LED's which are quite powerful (in my Logitech iFeel Mouseman that is). The only place though where this could be an issue would be with notebooks and in cordless battery mice.

How much do you think it would affect the battery life of a notebook and in cordless mice.

I seriously doubt using an optical vs. ball mouse would have any noticeable effect on the life of a laptop battery. LED's use very, very small amounts of power.

Be careful! Those optical mice use high power LEDs that have laser like outputs! You can get cancer by allowing the light to come in direct contact with you skin! It can make you go blind!!! You are going to need a 350 watt power supply for one!!!

Just kidding... really... had nothing better to post... really....

Don't forget that 'ball' mice use 4 LEDs internally.

The power consumption of both types is roughly equal at approx 0.5 W.

ya the LEDs in some optical mice are so strong they cut through the surface you are using it on. You need it plugged right into the wallsocket with a AC adapter...

Easy way to tell - get one of each, flipthem over, and look for the label that has the power requirements. I think electrical stuff is required to have a label like that.

What?! Your optical runs off your PC...Jeez....i have to run my off 220 AC! Cant do laundry cause I have to unplug the dryer!

Not all ball mice use leds I thought? Anyways, I cant see any noticable difference...

Have you ever seen a mouse ball...

How the hell did you get the mouse to stay still for that long.

Whenever I use my optical mouse my power flickers.

This is rediculous! I dont think that opitical mouse's are power hungry! I dont think you'd notice anyless power using them on your notebook.
