Although its no surprise that the X800XT consumes less power than a 9800XT, it's certainly interesting to see that the 9600 Pro uses 65% less power than a 9800 Pro.

9600Pro has half the pipelines, so less transistors, and it also has a 0.13 micron process compared to 0.15 for the 9800 Pro, so it's not that much of a suprise.
Smaller transistors + less transistors = less power consumption.
(75m for 9600Pro vs 107m for 9800Pro, that's 30% less transistors, so 30% less power needed, plus the smaller transistors needing less power).
