Power consumption LCD flat panel vs CRT

What is the difference in power consumption between an 17" LCD flat panel display vs a 19" CRT monitor? I'm considering replacing my 19" monitor with a 17" or possibly an 18" LCD to reduce eye strain and free up some desktop real estate. My current system and monitor consume about 38% of available power from my 670W UPS. Would an LCD make much difference?

I'm not sure, but if I had to guess I would say yes. I switched to an 18" LCD from a 19" CRT and the temperature drop alone was well worth it

Actually, I was just looking online and found a few manufacturer links which state that a 17" LCD consumes about 30W. I'm guessing that my 19" CRT consumes at least 110W (seems to be the average-reading through some product specs).

So, if my UPS can handle 670W max and I'm currently using 38% of the available power and my monitor is using approx 100W then I'm figuring my computer is using roughly 150W (at idle). Interesting...if I'm figuring this correctly.

Ok, someone plug in a CRT and go stare at your electric meter, then plug in an LCD and go stare at it again =)

Hehe, anyway it`s a known fact that LCDs use less power then CRTs.

🙂

A quick Google search indicates between 102 and 130w power consumption for a 19" CRT monitor.

18" LCD looks to be 55 to 67w.

So it'll consume about half the power when in use. 🙂

18" LCD's
19" CRT's
