Using the same (or very similar components, is there any power consumption difference between different motherboard chipsets?

Example: AMD 970 vs 990 vs 990FX.

Using the same processor and same number and types of drives and same chipset video card (apples vs apples) is there any lees draw with a 970 vs the step up 990 or 990FX? with no overclocking on processor or video card and running same O/S with the same power settings in the BIOS & the O/S.

With AM3+ chipsets, yes, there can be major differences. The higher end ones have more PCIe lanes to power, hence higher power consumption. As an example my old X58 chipset (yes, I know its an Intel chipset, not AMD) was rated at 25W for the northbridge alone.

With LGA1155/1150 and FM1/2(+), no, not really. This is because the northbridge is integrated into the CPU. The PCH/FCH have a TDP of 4-7W, so there are few practical differences.

Most motherboards and chipsets attempt to use less power as time progresses. That being said, the more components/features you are powering, the more the power consumption will increase.

It can depend on how efficient the VRM's are, also whether they have any additional chips to power.

as for more PCIe slots, power will only be used when a card is plugged in.

My example is a apples to apples comparison.
The only difference is the MB so any of that is immaterial.

Assuming the only difference between MB's is the chipset, everything else is the same (which it wouldn't be), does a 990FX draw more than a 970 chipset?
