the power adapter for my cable modem gets burning hot, once i unplug it and and plug it a couple of seconds later after it has cooled down, it seems the lag i usually get it gone. can the heat generated by the power adapter cause the lag?

I wouldn't think it is the heat. The heat is a symptom of something else that is happening. The power adapter should get warm but not burning hot. If it does, I would think there is something wrong with the modem itself or I guess the power adapter. Might be you are having problems because the modem is not getting enough power. When you unplug the unit and temps go back to normal, the unit works again until it overheats.

I'm guessing the power brick is dying, they get warm to the touch, but the only one I ever saw get really hot went up in smoke a few minutes later! :D
