Powell compares Iraq war to fight against Nazis

PARIS (AFP) - As US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) headed to Europe for celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings, Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) compared the war in Iraq (news - web sites) to the fight against Nazi Germany.

"I think we can compare the fight against the Nazis and the fight against Communism with the fight that we are now all engaged in against terrorism. And Iraq is a part of that battlefield," Powell said in an interview on France 3 television.

He said Iraq was not the only battlefield, however, citing the recent attacks in Saudi Arabia and the March 11 train bombings in Madrid, as well as the Istanbul bombings last year and the Bali blast in 2002.

"This is a new threat that we face and we have to approach it in the same way, with all of us working together, a great alliance of people who believe in peace, and freedom and the democratic process, to say to terrorists: 'You will not succeed. We will fight you'," said Powell.

Bush left Washington Thursday for Italy to attend a ceremony marking Rome's liberation by American troops on June 4, 1944, before heading to France to mark the June 6 landing of Allied troops on Normandy's beaches.

Apparently, we so needed an enemy to hate as much as we hated the dirty commies, we went to Iraq to create one. Smooth move -- we've executed the ultimate self-fulfilling prophesy. Only years from now will we be able to properly gauge the consequences of our meddling in the middle east.
 
I greatly respect Powell. If I were him, I would have been fired the first month for calling my boss a bonehead. He is the consumate team player, trying to do the best he can do on a losing team. He will soon be outta there and can move on to better things...
 
Oh - and sometimes I think he says things like that so you think "WTF - is he playing some kind of game to show how these people are thinking?"

Is that even possible? I can't imagine a high respected person tarnishing their reputation any worse. If he had links to multi-million dollar corporations like the people he's working with, he'd have some future ahead of him. (Think Al Gore)

So...if he says things that agrees with the President he has been somehow tainted.....hmmmm...wonder how you would feel if he said something that disagrees? Have you ever even considered that he says those things because he agrees with them? Nah....couldn't be that could it?

Considering he has hinted that he DOES disagree, i would have to say powell keeps two personas: one that publicly supports bush, and his other that privately despises the policies that bush adopted from the neo-cons.
 
Good grief, why doesn't Powell just buy a shovel and start digging? He's killing himself, and for what?

I would have voted for the guy for President, and gladly, before this fiasco in Iraq.

I think that if you study the US economy closely you'll notice that it needs a war from time to time to keep things going ... but I am not finished on my reasearch about that subject (final paper for economy) but there is defenetly a trend that the US gets into a "major" (relative from time to time) war every decade or so, and that that has a very posetive influence on it's economy, and at first sight it is almost a need to keep it running, because of the high military expenses (which are wasted without war).

fyi this is not a liberal sneer or something, I am just trying to make a conclusion out of things.
 
Well, this war has certainly put more stress on our economy. Tax cuts and deficits and huge military spending are the ingredients for a healthy economy. We're either going to soon see huge cuts in the Federal spending or a return to higher tax rates (or both.)
 
I can't understand this God Damned Powell mistique. It's been obvious since Nam that he's just a power appologist. His rewards are ample and his new found credibility what he always deserved in my opinion.
