Feds approve powdered alcohol; ‘Palcohol’ available later this year -- http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/apr/19/feds-approve-powdered-alcohol-palcohol-available-l/

It's 2-methyl-2-butanol absorbed in cyclodextrins to form a powder. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol_powder

You know someone is going to snort it, or mix it with ethanol and OD. Or it will be used to spike a regular drink, for date rape. Then it will be banned even if it's no worse than regular alcohol which kills 75,000 a year in this country.

I fail to see significant advantage of handling a powder compared to a liquid, unless you're in a situation where water is limited - so not an ideal situation to get wrecked.

The 20x greater intoxication potency of 2M2B is also a bit concerning for risk of overdose or spiking. That said, IPA doesn't get much abuse, and it's something like 50x as intoxicating as ethanol.

The long-term safety of these products is uncertain. I suspect, however, that the higher secondary/tertiary alcohols probably are safer than ethanol after suitable dose adjustment; but this will be something for long-term research.

Surprised the feds would even approve something like that, and was skeptical about the title.

But for what people rape you at football games for even a beer, things like that, you could just buy a Coke or something and away ya go.

Seems might cause a lot of grief in situations if true, I'm a bit skeptical if authentic.

Other thing that may be interesting, is that because tertiary alcohols aren't metabolised in the body, they hang around for a long time.

Ethanol is cleared from the body fairly quickly at a rate of about 1-2 units per hour.
2-methyl, 2-propanol has a half life in rats of about 12 hours. I'd presume that 2M2B is similar. Get wasted on that on Friday night, and you could still be intoxicated on Monday morning.

Of course that's also a benefit since it doesn't metabolize into a more harmful chemical like ethanol does.

Could this be molded into the form of a gem that one could wear around the neck at, say, a wedding reception?

I don't think this can take off. Plus it sounds too easy to get dosage wrong.

yeah and make you bleed out of all your orifices.

This sounds so dangerous- I doubt it will be on the market long.
That being said, I will have to snort some just so i can feel what it's like to get hammered in 15 seconds..

:)

Micro - encapsulation has been around quite a while. I think there will be a number of start ups but, whether it will take off is anyone 's guess. 90% of phone apps out there are solutions to problems no one had before so, you just never know.

I had no idea there were other alcohols (other than ethanol) that could be consumed safely.

Wtf??? Date rape? They'd obviously taste the alcohol.

That's what this world needs, more alcohol abuse. I was beginning to think we weren't dumb enough yet.

Exactly how does this cause more alcohol abuse.

It seems to be a legitimate concern, albeit one that probably couldn't be proven. Makes sense from a logical standpoint that making it more convenient and with a variety of flavors would increase the number of people who drink.

I think the best way to illustrate this would be with drinks that come flavored, like Mike's Hard Lemonade, frozen margarita mixes, daiquiris, etc. The presumption would be that the alcohol companies wouldn't bother making these things if it was just to serve the people that already drank. Otherwise, why waste the time and money on creating the products and marketing them.

But, yea, probably unable to be proven since it could just be to keep people that currently drink interested in drinking.
