POV, within the car or outside the car?

With Forza, I can drive like a champ if my frame of view is from insinde the car. Otherwise, I'm like pinball. Anybody else have this experience?

i strongly prefer cockpit views, or hood if cockpit is unavailable.

that said, i don't really have a problem playing in third person (though it takes some getting used to). and i can see how it makes it easier in many situations...but i still feel like it's 'cheating' in a way.

+1 for "inside view" although I typically prefer a bumper or hood cam to an actual cockpit view (not sure why, but I drive alot better).

I can drive much better with in car views and my lines are better. Can't stand the "camera behind the car" view of any kind.

I always prefered outside view until I played NFS Shift. I hear GT5 will have an even better cockpit view.

I used bumper view for quite some time. NFS: Shift's in-car view is tempting but I still do better with hood/bumper view.

The problem is that Forza's in-car view sucks. The gauges don't work (if they're even visible; most are obscured by the steering wheel), the mirrors are usually out of the frame, and overall they're just really low quality.

I've actually been using the far 3rd person view for Forza lately and doing well with it. I miss out on the rear view mirror, but I get a better sense of where the edges of my car are. On top of that, even though it sounds dumb, I like to be able to see my car. Bumper cam does a disservice to the beautiful graphics of modern games, and even if I drive a little better with it, I like being able to at least see part of my hood, my car's interior, or the outside of the car. Otherwise I am not motivated to try new cars and the game becomes boring more quickly.

I'm mostly indifferent, and it comes down to how its implemented in the game. Some games the behind the car view is basically the only one that doesn't suck (I hate the ones where the "in car" is 2 inches off the ground in front of the car), but if its done well, it definitely adds to the immersion.

For Forza I use the helicopter cam because it lets me see the turn before I get there. It's hard for me to do that with the bumper cam. Shift on the other hand, I use the bumper cam, feels like you driving faster. But the helicopter view in Shift is horrible because of it's physics. When you try to turn the rear end kicks out, and it just doesn't look right.

Usually cockpit view or sometimes bumper view, they are the most realistic. I don't do 3rd person view because you don't drive in 3rd person view, lol. I just think its totally awesome simulating what it would be like driving behind the wheel of the fastest cars in the world. Yeah the graphics are a little low-res on some parts of the interior, but you should be paying attention to the road when your racing, not the interior (except for the dash).

I only use outside cams temporarily if a racing game is really kicking my ass and I need to get used to the tracks and driving model.

Otherwise it's in-car all the way. I like to feels like I'm actually racing, and in every case I've come across it's definitely more challenging.

For Forza I do third person. First the mirrors suck so you can't tell when someone is beside you for shit, second I can see the track better, and third I just like to see the car I'm driving.

The first time I played any driving game at length was Burnout Paradise, and I stuck with the standard 3rd person view. I found it almost impossible to do any stunts in the first person view. Plus you can see further down the road in 3rd and better peripherally as well. Even in Midnight Club LA I just cant drive using cockpit. I just end up hitting things that I never do in 3rd person.

Bumper or roof cam. I can only do in-car if I had a steering wheel. With the PC, it's in car. (I don't have a wheel for the xbox)

Aside from being able to see the outside of your car (which doesn't help you at all), I don't think the field of view in the 3rd person view is all that unrealistic. It doesn't really show you a useful distance behind your car, it really just lets you see what's on your sides. I actually think the in-car and bumper cameras are unrealistically restrictive. In reality I have peripheral vision and the ability to quickly glance to the side and locate objects. On a screen it takes more time to perceive the location of objects around you because you don't have the benefit of depth perception.

A cockpit view with three screens would probably be the most realistic.

fyi in forza 3, if you want the mirrors to show up in cockpit view, you can enable multiscreen mode and set the FOV. however you're unable to look left/right at an angle when you do this. all the way left/right still works

Nice, I'll try this when I get home!

I drive in the 3rd person in FM2 & FM3. I like the cockpit view but find I am much slower because it is harder to judge where the car actually is in relation to everything else. it is also harder to see the braking line(I only run with the brake zones on) especially because I have a tendency to brake upgrade every car and I can stop quicker than people who spend their PI on speed instead so I do a lot of late braking. I have found that I have been using the hood cam more and do pretty well with it since it gives you the rearview mirror in FM3.

Bumper/hood is what I use most of the time. Maybe if I get a bigger TV I'll swap to in car, probably around 65" would make the proportions about right for me. Cockpit in Shift is pretty nice, you just have too much of a focus inside the car if you don't have a huge display IMO.

For stunt/combat games I tend to use third person(Burnout, Wipeout etc).

I generally like third person view. As mugs said, the in-car views in most games are much more restrictive than that of a real car and take up a large part of the screen. In-car does feel more immersive, but third person is better from a gameplay standpoint.
