i hate political parties. i wish we could go back to Washington and Adams. some say they were Federalist but they really weren't part of any political party. heck even Washington warns against them.

you need to reword your poll.....
on one hand the way you have it worded if I agree with you and vote YES...then am I agreeing with you, when in fact if I vote YES -- I could mean that i wnt POTUS to have a political party.....

reword yourt\ poll....

How would this work? Doesn't matter if you call the President something or nothing, his ideology will line up with one group of legislatures more than the other.

Best we do is go back to the old days where the Vice President was the runner up of the Presidential election.

You and your sister probably never fought.

Fighting is natural... and not fighting is coerced.

The only leader not part of a party was Washington, but parties formed during his administration, Adams against Jefferson.

Because there are differences on issues, there are parties. What good does it do to have a candidate with a set of issues not use the word party?

You will still have Adams pushing the same policies and Jefferson doing the same, with followers of each - or the same for Obama and McCain.

The thing to do is to fix the problems with the system, not oppose parties - things such as ranked voting so people aren't 'throwing away their vote' and focring two parties.

To limit the participation of biased interests like corporations from dominating the system with donations to the parties they need to take to get elected.

Those are the sorts of problems - banning parties doesn't do any good IMO.

Adams most certainly was part of the Federalist Party. He was the only Federalist, although Washington sided with the Hamiltonian Federalists than the Jeffersonian Republicans.

Anyway, the easiest way (and only way other than bracket style elections) to eliminate the 2 party system for POTUS, is to have the state legislatures vote for electors.

parties will always exist and there's nothing you can do about it short of electing a dictator.

there's strength in numbers... 51 people working towards the same goals will get more done together than 51 people all working separately.

I do with alternative parties had more of a voice in DC, though.

It would be awesome to see party affiliation removed from candidates, and they have to be elected based solely on issues, but alas, that will never happen because too many people care more about their party than the issues.

wasn't there an attempt in some district in 2008 to get party affiliation removed from the ballot listing and it got shot down by the courts or something?

IMO, it's not the party idea itself that is the problem. Plenty of parties exist in other areas, politics included, that somehow manage to keep the level of discourse above sand-throwing temper tantrums.

Personally, I blame the following for where we are:

1) Karl Rove and the disgusting meme-machine that followed
2) The media, both liberal and conservative, but mostly conservative

There is no longer any respect or dignity for journalism in this country. When you have a meme-machine that is able to get its message propagated so easily by the media, its a recipe for a huge shit sandwich (kudos to whoever finishes that line).

Finally, I think that *anything* that gets too big no longer works for its defined purpose. Once protectionism sets in (corporate, political, social, etc.), you have everyone toting the same message since they don't want to create waves. The end result is just regurgitating the same bs ad nauseum.

Why do you hate political parties? What would be the advantage to not having the POTUS have a political party affiliation?

So long as the nation has parties, the President will side with / belong to one.

We had exactly one President who despised political parties and strongly espoused that very concept-George Washington. Unfortunately, it's not workable as over two hundred years of history have proven.

A more significant goal would be to eliminate the stranglehold the two dominant parties have on our political system. To a very large extent that stranglehold is imposedand maintained by our network of election laws. It doesn't take a conspiracy nut to see that the Democratic Party and the GOP have actively collaborated with each other to preserve and strengthen the present two party system.

While parties exist for a reason, there are some stupid things that come from them(or arguably the people in them). You'll get a lot of people from one party who will oppose something someone from another party says or does for no reason other than trying to oppose the party even if the idea itself is good. People who will work to fight against progress as long as they manage to make the opposing party look bad. Such people are despicable.
