Potty training

Our 10 month old (as of today) is learning to walk pretty quickly now, she can stand on her own leaning against stuff, and is getting better at balancing without support. My mother-in-law wants to start potty training my daughter as soon as she can walk and stand on her own, and has already put her onto her little training toilet once, supposedly she knew enough to go almost immediately.

For months now she's known enough not to go to the bathroom if she didn't have a diaper on, we haven't had any of those lovely accidents where you take it off and she lets loose since she was like 3 months old. I was kind of curious, so today I took her diaper off, sat her on our toilet (with support of course), and told her it was okay to go to the bathroom. Within about 5 seconds she was peeing, quite a bit too, which tells me she had been holding it in for a while. My parents said that myself and my two brothers weren't fully trained until almost 18 months, while my wife was trained by 15 and her brother by 13 or 14 at the most. I'm betting that our kid could be pretty well trained by 12 or 13 months if we work on it with her.

Any remember at what point they were trained, or when their kids learned?

Dont rush it or force it, it will backfire. Let them come around in their own time. Patience is key:)

I learned when I was 3 ish...

Saw my cousin take a piss in the toilet... Followed his example...
My parents freaked out that I knew how to use the toilet

Not really sure we are "forcing" it at this point, she likes trying new things out. When she was put on her training toilet she was very happy and laughing the whole time, so it wasn't something that annoyed her. She likes playing with things with moving parts like lids and cupboards and whatnot, and remote controls especially. She's already figured out how to take the back off the one in our bedroom, and remove the batteries, and she knows that they have to go back in but she doesn't know they have to be in a certain direction yet.

BTW right now she's sitting behind me on the bed doing her Mariah Carey impression...I'm surprised that there isn't any broken glass around, she's pretty darn loud lol

A kid will be potty trained when they are physically and emotionally ready.

Starting to teach her early is not a bad thing. The only bad thing would be a negative/frustrated response from the adults around her if she fails for not being ready.

Introducing babies to new things early is great. They wont do them, learn them, perform them until they are ready, but I think they will pick up on them easier... when they are ready... if they have been exposed to them earlier.

Just dont stress it, press her or show signs of frustration or disappointment if she does not move at your pace.

and good luck!

:)

me: 14 months or something like that (much earlier than normal) - my mother had nothing better to do than get me toilet trained as soon as possible. My own kids: both before the age of 2.

Get the "how to pottytrain in one day" (or something like that, don't remember exactly) book. It tells you how to tell if they are ready. If you wait till they are ready, you can pretty much potty train them in a couple of hours. Worked great on my first, the second is almost ready to start.

Child #1 - almost 4 years old
Child #2 - just over 2 years old
Child #3 - about a year and a half

Under a year is extremely early - not in a bad way it's just very unusual. We made the mistake of pushing too hard with our first one and got frustrated...finally about the age of 3 he went without a diaper until he needed to do a b.m., then we'd put a diaper on him and clean up when he was finished. My niece was 6-7 months but that was incredibly early.

i think my older boy was around three, the younger one saw his brothers example and was a little sooner. tho, to see the toilet in their bathroom, sometimes i think they still aren't trained! (they are currently 10 and 8 and have amazingly bad aim considering how close to the top of the toilet they are!)

LOL

My mom would probably agree with you on that last bit there. She was the only woman in our home, with three sons who shared a bathroom, sometimes it got pretty bad. We also didn't like cleaning too much, so you can imagine.

Everybody is very positive around our daughter though, she's got myself and my wife, then my in-laws (mother, father, brother), plus about 3 other aunts and an uncle locally, plus my wife's grandparents, all in the same town. She gets to see about 4 generations of family almost every day, she has a constant influx of people playing with her and teaching her stuff, so no danger of her getting frustrated or scared off. I'm betting she won't learn completely until later this year, it is still kind of neat that she knows what the toilet is for, and waits until you put her on it to go to the bathroom.

We waited a lot longer than we meant to with our son (he's a little over 4 now). He took to peeing really well, but when he was younger, he had a lot of problems with constipation, so taking a deuce in the toilet has been quite the adventure. My wife went from doing laundry every 4-5 days to every other just from all the underwear she has to wash now. :(

My kids is 5 months old and just now able to "kinda balance" with the help of her mother or I. How ANY kid could walk and use the toilet at 6months is nonsense.

My son was on track around 18 mos to 2 years, then completely regressed until 3 and a half. At that point I blackmailed him by buying a toy he wanted, then putting it on the shelf in plain view until he had met a goal. It only took 3 weeks and 3 or 4 toys until he stopped having accidents.

That does seem a bit early.

But VeggieFrog was fully walking at 6 months and was fully potty trained by just under a year. The potty training early was great because I HATED changing diapers. The walking part at 6 months drove me crazy because I had to child proof the house earlier and had me running after her non stop earlier than I expected.

My daughter was potty trained at 18 months. Haven't bought a diaper since. My nephew is 2 years old and not potty trained yet.

i agree. it was not true potty training.

BUT you can time when the baby is going to go and put them on the potty. while not true potty trained it is close.
