I have some container plants I want to keep outdoors. They came in a nursery pot. Can I just put that in a pot without a drain hole (double potting?) or do I need to put stuff on the bottom first? Or do I need a pot with an actual drain hole?

If the pot doesn't have holes get a drill and add some.
Or content yourself with tipping it over after every rain so it can drain.

You need to drill holes in the bottom of the pot especially if your keeping them outdoors. Otherwise the water is going to stay in the pot and rot your plants. Even putting gravel or something in the bottom isn't going to allow the excess water to be removed without dumping it out yourself.

Likely other pointed out it won't work. Either indoor or out door pot have to have drain holes.

Now I only use a specific type of self watering pot and mod it to be more efficient and mix my own soil. if you want more info let me know.
