Potentially stupid laptop question...

I've been seriously considering a first laptop purchase for the upcoming school year... I want something good, for a good price. Right now I'm leaning toward the Sony PCG-FX210 or 215, with the Duron 800 in 'em, but I have one major question...

Can a Duron notebook be upgraded to an Athlon MP down the road? I know my desktops, but laptop upgrade capabilities are a mystery to me (other than memory and HD, I just assume them to be nonexistant)... A Duron 800 is plenty of power for me now, especially being that it's not my primary computer (I actually run Durons in all my machines at the moment). But it would be nice to know that I can throw something more powerful in there later, should the need arise...

I dont know for sure...

There are 2 versions of the Palamino Durons that are used... the standard socketA and the OBGA. If it is the SocketA then it is possible that you will be able to swap it at some later date, however if it is the OBGA packaging, then it is basically soldered to the board and will not be upgradable.

It is more likely that it is the OBGA for cost/size reasons.

please a sony you be spending alot more, why buy a sony when you can get an IBM or Toshiba with an intel chip for same price. if it's the sony vio forget it, you will be paying for the name. sony make good tv audio etc but talk about price. any ways good luck

Actually it wont be as easy. There is a different mobile palimino. It is supposed to have some different pins for powernow or something. Anand did an article about it when the palimino core was first introduced. Personally while I love AMD I think you are better off looking into a Tualtin laptop. There are a few out now if you just do a search through general hardware you will find links to most of them.

Plan on being able to upgrade the RAM and HDD, nothing more
DO NOT go into buying a laptop with the pipe dream you can change anything else.
In some cases you can, but most times you cant or it's not worth it.
