If I buy this fromt he boards it's only $500 shipped

should I add anything else? or is this a mistake?

Seriously...It looks like you are trying to make a gaming rig for $500. While what you have are not "bad" components, it may not be the best path.

So do you have the other stuff covered, such as Case, power supply, optical drive? Is this used or new stuff?

If you already have the case, power supply, optical drive, keyboard, mouse, operating system, monitor...you may be alright, but that is a lot of stuff.

Personally, if you need a whole system for $500 there are two roads to take as far as I see it.

1. You need to start thinking in the way of a 6600gt or x800gto, maybe snatch up a good deal on a a64 3000+ and motherboard combo, get yourself a 250 GB hard drive (forget the raptor for now) and go for a gig of ram. Pick out a case and power supply and pick up an oem copy of xp home (or whatever os you want) and go from there.
*edit* If you are looking to keep up with the next generation, you may want to look into the AM2 offerings, instead of the last generation a64's...

2. Get a Dell, although finding one with a good video card at that price point may not be the easiest task...you may have to buy an cheap Dell and add a vid card.

First, You'll get good performance, but no upgradeability. (This is good and bad, the lack of upgrade options is why you can get a good deal on it)

Second, Raptors are great but they aren't worth the money. Since you're on a tight budget, I'd get something else.

I see where you are getting it from. If you have everything else you need it's not a bad deal. the 3400+ and x800xt pe will still be able to handle everything at lower resolutions.

ah yes...i agree. in the case that you have the rest of the stuff you need, then you will be in pretty good shape. you'll be able to get some nice eye candy with most games, bar perhaps the latest of the latest games. any game will be playable though..ie i play oblivion at 10x7 and low-med settings on my 3200+ and 6600...you should be able to smoke that pretty well with your setup.

hmm....

You would most likely be better off getting an AM2 and OCing, get a good cheap PCI E card like X800GTO2 or something and soft mod it to a X850XT PE.
Get good cheap 1gb of ram like some nice OCZ or Mushkin. And buy a bigger cheaper HDD and youll be on a wayy better path!

IMO, you can NOT build a worthwhile COMPLETE system for $500 !!!

Wait until you have $1,000.

Not everyone games at 1920x1200. Many new games will run fine at lower resolutions on cheaper systems. You can't make a blanket statement like that. I have a Sempron rig, it has played every game I have bought so far at 25FPS+ at 1280x768. Not everyones definition of "worthwhile complete system" are the same. That being said you can't expect to turn up all the details and whatnot, but for $500 instead of $1000 I can live without some of those details.

I have a 500W Ultra X-finity and a nice case lying around.. I also have a monitor and everything else...

I recently sold my 2.6, 1gb, 9800SE, 80gb IDE.. to a sucker for $500..

so I'm basically replacing my system with:

ASUS K8NE-Deluxe motherboard, socket 754: AMD 64 3400+ 2.4Ghz
2 gigs of ddr400 corsair valueselect
Ati x800xt pe 256meg agp
74 gig raptor

you are REALLY wasting money on that raptor. STOP if you only need 80 gigs, just get a regular IDE 80gig from a b&m and you can usually get a killer deal. get a 7600gt and youll be set. 2gig is also overkill for a $500 budget, get 2x512mb corsair value or some other cheap ram, works fine.

i would go with the asus a8n-e s939 and a cheao 3200+ s939 and go for the seagate sata 80gb hd for $55. That would still be close to $500. How much did you find the x800 pe for?

It's part of a package deal on the FS/FT forums.

Newegg prices...

ASUS K8NE-Deluxe motherboard, socket 754.......$67
AMD 64 3400+ 2.4Ghz.......................................$145
2 gigs of ddr400 corsair valueselect.....................$162
Ati x800xt pe 256meg agp...................................$275
74 gig raptor.....................................................$160

Total: $809

Granted, that vid card is open box and overpriced, but if you figure even just $200 for the video card you are still coming in at ~ $730. Plus there's a mail in rebate on the raptor, but then figure in shipping....yada yada yada....so yes....$500 is a good deal.

Since OP said he has the case and power supply already, the only reason for not getting this is if you want to buy brand new components in the new socket. Otherwise, performance wise, this is a great deal.

I did say, IMO. And you are correct, may not be everyone's definition of worthwhile complete system. But, if I wanted a $500 system, I would buy it from DELL and would not waste my valuable time building it. IMO, system cost has to be a good bit more than $500 in order to go to all the effort involved in building it myself, unless TIME spent is not worth anything to you.

I don't see why there's so much criticism. He sold all his old stuff for $500 and currently has a PSU and case. For $500, that is a kick ass setup, even if it's used. The X800 XT is no slouch. Mine, when overclocked, scored almost 7k in 3dmark05. That's near 7800GT performance. Sure it might have trouble running the newer games with max settings at high resolutions, but for the latest Steam games, Battlefield 2, etc, it runs them all easily at max settings. Go for it. It's a free upgrade.

waht happened to the free vid card? Unless youre a hard core overclocker, IMO, that DFI board is too expensive for your purposes. Save $60 and go with the asus a8n-sli. The 6800gt is kinda outdated. Where are you getting it?

That second rig is better. The 6800gt is about as fast as the x800xt pe. The 3200+ would be slower but if it's a Venice core you should be able to OC it pretty far. RAM is getting dirt cheap, so adding another gig or buying 2x1 later shouldn't be too exspencive. Especialy with everyone moving to DDR2 here soon. I would rather have a 74 gig Raptor then a 300 gig, but thats just me, as I have only used about 15 of my 80 gigs so far. If you use alot of space a 300 gig is way better.
