Potential investor...some advice?

Hey I would like to learn more about investing in the stock market and/or real estate. Can anyone recommend a good book covering these topics for beginner's? Also if you have any personal advice you would like to share, that would be much appreciated as well. Thanks!

A couple of sites to start with:

www.fool.com
www.morningstar.com

Both sites have extensive new investor sections where they will introduce you to the different types of investments, overall financial and life considerations you have to take into account before you begin investing, etc. I recommend you read them both over the course of a few months and then begin to look at decision making after.

i was planning on doing a "paper investment" or going to those websites to play the stock market game. A friend told me that most people that invest lose everything because they either don't have confidence or haven't done their research...

I have this book, it's pretty good:

http://www.amazon.com/Only-Investment-G..._1/002-6911195-9009652?ie=UTF8&s=books

(note that's not a referral link, I manually went to Amazon to search for it)

It's easy to read and there's lots of good advice in it that you might not expect in an investment guide. One example, if you're throwing a party, buy one good bottle of vodka well in advance and use it yourself. Buy cheap vodka for the party and fill up the good bottle.

As far as playing the stock market game, Google Finance has a portfolio thing that's easy to use. I suggest using "play" money for a while if you're going to do the individual stock thing. When it comes to real money, only invest money that you're willing to lose by playing the stock market. Retirement savings should be safe.

One Up on Wall Street by Peter Lynch is recommended by many investors. According to Amazon, 137 books cite this book. Peter Lynch is one of the best stock pickers in the world.

I just finished reading The First Time Investor : How to Start Safe, Invest Smart, and Sleep Well , which basically claims that success at investing in individual stocks is completely random (i.e. Wall Street analysts don't know jack, and that guys like Peter Lynch are just lucky), but investing in mutual fund asset classes can yield a 10% average return. The authors do a horrible job of backing up their claims though. Additionally, there's a separate workbook that goes along with the book that fills in quite a few gaps in the text. I thought this was a good contrast to what almost everyone else is saying.

Get your feet wet by playing Virtual Stock Exchange. You can easily create your own private game, and set your own commission prices.

Wall Street Journal Guide to Understanding Money and Investing

WSJ has a few other "Guide to..." books that are an easy read and very good.

Should be able to find it in most book stores for ~$15 or less. Maybe even a used book store like Half Priced Books, if you have one near you.

Had been investing for 2 years with little to no success. Picked up that book last January and have had the best year yet. Lost a lot of money, but made a hell of a lot more, ending the year up more than 300% (definitely not typical). 🙂

While I didn't follow the guidelines exactly, I do credit the book with giving me the confidence and knowledge to focus on the correct stocks and to know when to buy, when to sell, and when to do nothing. I definitely advise using a fantasy trading site for at least a year before putting your own money at risk.
